tickets can be changed BEFORE the train leaves, for a later train with a small fee, or for a different DAY, for a higher fee.
i BELIEVE no refunds on missed trains.
as maribel pointed out on her explanation, these reduced fares must be bought leg by leg.. all one ways to get the cheapest fares, as if you put in round trip.. you will automatically only get the normal 20% round trip discount that exists for all trains.

yk,
When I printed out my very first Web fare pdf ticket, much to my chagrin, I found it printed just the trajectory, Madrid Chamartin-Segovia but nothing elseĦ
When I sent my pdf file to another computer, where I had the latest version (8??) of Acrobat Reader, and printed it, the ticket printed out properly, with car number, seat assignment...everything. My problem was with Acrobat Reader.

A-ha! Muchos Gracias, Maribel! It's the problem with the Adobe (mine's way too old!) like you said. I downloaded the newest version and now my tickets look like real tickets with all the info on them!
However, I still don't have my very first ticket purchase (probably because of the pop-up blocker), so I guess I'll need to get the actual ticket from the agent using my "localizer" #?

What am I doing wrong on the Renfe site? Starting from the English version, when I select "buy tickets", the site switches to Spanish. Likewise, if I fill in select your trip with Madrid to Seville and then hit on the basket, it switches to the Spanish site. I am sure I am doing something stupid...can someone help!

swissgirl-
It's actually easier to purchase the ticket on the Spanish site than the English one.
To do the entire purchase in English, after you click on the "shopping basket" on the next screen (for me, it's another window) you click on the bottom Left corner "Seleccione su idioma" to switch to English. Then the purchase page will be in English.
However, when I tried it yesterday, my purchase never went through. After I selected the train and the ticket and filled in the form and clicked purchase, it just went NOWHERE! I finally gave up and did the purchase in Spanish. It's pretty simple using the translation that is offered in this thread and using that seat61 website link.
Good luck!

swissgirl,
I believe that to purchase tickets, you will get transferred to the Spanish site. Here is a link that will help you with the translation:
http://www.seat61.com/Europe-train-tickets.htm#Spain
Scroll to "How to use the Spanish Railways website" which is near the bottom of the page.

Not having much luck with renfe website. I am trying to buy tickets between March 18-22 for Barcelona-Granada (Overnight), Granada-Seville, Seville-Cordoba and Cordoba-Madrid. The overnight train doesn't seem to show the price for berth. There are no trains listed for Granada-Seville. The other 2 have no "Web" or "Estrella" fares. I have followed directions on this thread. Any feedback is appreciated.

I just checked the 18th of March and both the Spanish and English language sites appear to be working fine. The pages show the price for the compartments. There is a one euro difference between the web fare and and purchasing the tickets at the station.

March 18-22 is this year peak season , Holy Week. It would be nothing strange to me that many trains would be already booked specially in Andalucia. If you can't find what you want, don't forget you also can travel by coach.
Also the flight between Barcelona and Granada probably is cheaper than the overnight train. These are difficult dates, sure !

ok, can you all stand one more question on train fares. if you are traveling with children, is that NINO??? If not, are there any discounts for children, particularly if the web or Estrella fares are not available?
What is meant by Carnet Joven on the drop down box? What about tarjeta dorad? These are all discounted fares on the site.
One final question: I am arriving in Madrid at 8:25. The only Estrella fare left is on the 11:00 train...should I chance it? Is this enough time? Thanks to all.

Yes, "niño" is a child And yes, there are discounts. 40% of the price for kids until 14. You have to ask for the kids tariff because it is not exactly a discount but a different ticket with a different tariff.
Carnet Joven is a card available to Spaniards under 25 , but it is not Renfe related. It offers discounts on many things, one of them being train tickets.
Tarjeta Dorada is a senior card. Only available for Spaniards or residents in Spain from the EU.
If the plane is on time..I think you have time enough. It will be Madrid rush hour at 8:30 , though !

Thanks Kenderina,
as there are no more web or estrella fares on the return trip to Madrid, I think I am better off buying round trip tickets, with 2 NINO tickets. My daughter is actually 14 (turns 15 April 1)...is the nino fare 14 and under? or under age 14??
Thanks again for your help.

I purchased AVE tickets for the Madrid to Seville train online through the renfe site. Do I need the printed ticket or can I get my tickets once I arrive at the train station? If I need the ticket, is there a way to reprint these tickets. Only one of my tickets printed at the time of purchase.
Thank you!
Thank you!
