Train Tickets in Spain

If at all possible, buy your tickets directly from the RENFE website and not from another train ticket reseller. On other threads I have seen complaints about not being able to figure out the RENFE website but I managed to figure out the Spanish RENFE website. Notice that the dates in Spain are written day first, then month. I bought my train tickets from home, about 4 weeks before my trip. If it is less than 4 weeks until your trip, there is a non-zero change that tickets for a trip you want will not display because those trips are sold out. In that case you may need to look for ALSA bus tickets.

You can buy from Renfe's own website www.Renfe.com, with no booking fee.
Renfe.com does have some poor and confusing English translations, it conflates the 3 fare types (Basico, Elige and Premium) with the 2 classes (Standard and Comfort) and it can often reject overseas bank cards (but now also offers PayPal). It's one of my least favourite train operator websites. You even have to know that 'Ingles' means English, to switch it to English!
If you want or need an alternative that accepts foreign cards, is much easier to use and written in plain English, use www.thetrainline.com - there's a small booking fee.
If my 83-year-old mother needed Spanish train tickets, I know which one I'd suggest!

I did know Ingles was English
I had them all chosen and got to the part where I had to pay, pressed the PayPal button and that is where my attempt ended. It was like I was hung-up on, no tickets purchased and now I must go back and try again.

How far ahead is it possible to book tickets on the Renfe website? We'll be in Andalucia in October and hope to connect via train from Jerez to Seville, Seville to Cordoba and Cordoba to Granada. After that, well have a rental car for the last stretch of our trip.
