Train ticket prices for kids

My family and I are planning a trip to Germany for May and we'll be bringing our boys who are 3 and 7 years old. Does anyone know at what age a person needs a ticket for the DB trains and whether there are reduced rates for certain ages as well. Thanks.

Kids under 15 travel free with paying parents. I think you need to indicate your kids and their ages when you buy your tickets though.

Hi F,

Children under 6 are free.

Children 6-14 traveling with an adult get reduced fares.

See www.bahn.de for schedules and tickets.
You can get big discounts buying in advance.

The DB site has details about all sorts of deals, some of the best of which for families (up to 5 people) are the Regional Tickets (Länder-Tickets), which allow unlimited travel for a day within one of the Federal states for about $30.

So if you're in Munich, for example, you can take the whole Gang of Four to Ludwig's Castle and back for €27.

I think you will find that in Germany, children up to and including 14 y.o., traveling with a parent or grandparaent, who is paying full fare or with a Bahn card, will get a discount of <100%>, i.e., they will not have to pay anything at all.
