Train Station at Munich Airport
From the bahnhof at the Munich airport can we get on a train that takes us directly to Graz, Austria or do we have to go to the central train station in Munich first? At the airport, how far and complicated/easy is it to get from the Delta gate to the train?

Airport trains only go to Munich's main train station, along with intermediate stops, on the S-Bahn, or local commuter rail system. no long-distance trains from airport. But from Munich's main station Graz is about 4-5 hours, with a change of trains in Salzburg. www.bahn.de for schedules and fares (68 euro Munich Hbf-Graz, 2nd cl). Plans are to make a high-speed Meglev train from munich airport to main train station - going up to 200 mph and taking only 15 minutes but these are far off. Don't know where the train station at airport is in relation to anything.

The DB trains do not operate out of the airport station as previously described.
The easiest way to get from the Munich airport to the main station is to take the Lufthansa bus.
I have tried both ways: bus and S bahn and much prefer the bus.
The bus stops at Terminal A in the older complex and in front of the new one.
It is a 6 hour ride to Graz with a change in Bischofshofen.
Trains leave the main station at 11:26 and 13:26. There are others, but they involve more changes.
The 15:26 connection requires a change at Salzburg and again at Bischofshofen.
I flew Delta to Munich last summer, and I recall we came in at Terminal C.
The bus stop is outside of A, as I recall.
The bus top is marked with a green and yellow H sign.
We collected our luggage and walked out to the bus stop and rode to the main station quite easily with only one stop.
Takes about 45 minutes.

Hi Bob and Bob, Thank you very much for your responses. Lots of helpful info to guide us from Munich airport to Graz train station. We flew into and out of Munich last year but didn't have to hop the train right away for Graz. This year our friends are in Hawai'i so no reason to stick around. We were hoping to avoid the madhouse at Munich's main station but I guess we can't. Again, thank you very, very much for your time and assistance!

Choose a train that stops at Munich Eastern Railway Station (München Ost). It's much smaller and you can avoid the "madhouse" at Munich Main. Many trains to Salzburg have a stop at Munich East. The S8 Line from the airport will reach Munich East first, and then proceed to main station .

good tip but don't trains to Austria start at the Hauptbahnhof - main station - point is more seats would be empty and may be fairly full before getting to Ost? Or do these trains come from Ost and then to Hauptbahnhof - i always prefer to get on the train where it originates if i don't have a seat reservation.

If you decide against the bus and take the S-8 stopping at Munich East you'll find the transfer there quite easy...down from the S-Bahn platform and up onto the DB platform(s); there are escalators. None of the humanity swirl found at the main station.

In my experience the trains originate at Main and often make a first stop at East a couple minutes later.
i agree about getting on at originating stations especially if I don't have a seat reservation but in this case and the routing/change involved I wonder if seat reservations are even warranted.
