Train Rome to Venice

Finally... after nearly FOUR YEARS of lurking around this website and traveling vicariously through others, I'm going back to Italy! Please bear with me, as my itinerary is all over the place right now, and I'll be posting numerous times on numerous subjects before this is all over.

My sister is studying in Florence beginning the end of this month, and my parents and I are flying round trip to Rome and then continuing onward on a whirlwind tour.

Right now, just a simple question: how scenic is the train ride from Rome to Venice? I'm considering an afternoon to early evening trip, and I love riding the trains in Italy, as long as there's "good stuff" to look at. As an indication, I found the train ride from Florence to Rome fairly enjoyable and scenic. For some reason, I have the impression that the area surrounding Venice in a pretty good radius isn't that scenic...

Any comments would be helpful! Thanks, and yay!

Hello ceb, well I haven't found the train ride scenery from Florence to Venice breathtaking but it is certainly more relaxing then trying to drive, especially during the commute hours. And of course arriving at the Santa Lucia Train station in Venice is beautiful.

Hi C,

The section between Florence and Venice is only so-so.

Between Florence and Bologna, the route goes through mountainous areas, but often passes through tunnels. After Bologna, the terrain flattens somewhat as the route passes through farmlands.

Thanks for the responses... Looks like we're going to go from Rome to Florence, meet up with my sister, then continue onward to Venice. Venice is the problem child in the itinerary - my mom really wants to see it, so we're going, but it's so out of the way from the general Florence/Tuscany/Rome area that the rest of the trip focuses on!
