Well, I like trains. So this what I would do. Arrange for a private car service to meet you at Gatwick and drive you direcr to Kings cross Train station and then hassle free train up to Edingurgh. You can reserve facing seats with a table between you

Getting from Gatwick to KX by car is a major misery. It takes longer than even the worst possible train option. It's only a sensible option if you like traffic lights and traffic jams.
Just fly - you could be in Edinburgh before the train even leaves KX.
And do take note of my other suggestions for getting around.

Thank you to all suggestions and ideas. I have done a lot of research before posting. Your comments are confirming what I already knew but was hoping for something better. I will keep you posted as to what we decide.

annhig - I agree that it would have been easier just to fly to Scotland, but it is a whole lot cheaper and I mean a whole lot - to start in London. It will still be cheaper for us to start in London and find alternative route to Scotland. I only asked for suggestions and unfortunately confirmation to what I had already found online. I guess I was hoping that maybe someone knew of a better way -
Thank you to everyone for your help - I do see I may have to spend a little more to get what I need and to where I want to go - not a problem

Even flying into LHR would be better since you would also have the option of flying to Glasgow or Edinburgh on BMI. Am I correct in assuming that you have alredy purchased tickets for Gatwick or that there are no flights to LHR from your departure city?

Yes, the tickets are already purchased - I wasn't thinking geographically when I purchased the tickets - I was more concerned about the money and didn't realize Gatwick was so far out
