Train or Bus from Sorrento To Grosseto

Hi all

I am reposting as i am a greenhorn at this, I'll try to get it right this time. My family and I would like to know is it possible to travel to Grosseto or some other town in this area either by bus or train from Sorrento (Naples)? Our final destination is Florence, which we will move on to the following day, so we would like to stop off somewhere which is halfway for one night (i.e. Grosseto). We will originally be starting our tour from Rome, so therefore do not want to go back that route and would like to travel up the coast to Grosseto or some other town in which accommodation exists and has a train or bus station. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to organise this route or any suggestions on accommodation close to the train or bus stations?. I hope this is clearer folks, let me know.

I use public transportation all the time in Italy (trains and busses) so I would recommend a train up there. There is a nid-week direct (no stop) IC plus train # 516 Capodimonte leaving from Napoli Centrale at 7:36 am, arriving in Grosseto at 11:27 am (3h51m). Check the www.trenitalia.com website directly for more detailed information and prices.

Thanks Huitres

Do you know if there are any hotels or B&Bs close by to the station in Grosseto?

Hi Takaerao:

I've stopped briefly in Grosseto, but have never stayed overnight there. However, I did find a comprehensive listing of some good hotel properties in and around Grosseto that you might look into for more information. (Since you would be going by train, it might be more convenient to stay at one of the hotels listed in town like the Bastiani Grand Hotel, vs the outlying areas).

Fattoria Maremmana
Strada Delle Strillaie 292
Grosseto, Italy

From USD $82.09 per night

Property Info -
The Fattoria Maremmana is a modern hotel centred on an original farmhouse set amongst the rolling Tuscan hills, six kilometres from the coastal village of Grosseto. All are equipped with satellite television, climate control, minibars, safes and refrigerators. Bathrooms have jetted tubs, complimentary toiletries, hair dryers and makeup mirrors. Guests can stroll and picnic in the well-kept gardens, swim in the outdoor pool, and enjoy the tennis and basketball courts, as well as the table tennis facilities, while the little ones are kept busy in the children's pool and playground. They can also hire mountain bikes onsite, and there are beauty services, fitness equipment and massages available. Free parking is on offer for those arriving by car. The hotel is well placed for exploring the countryside and surrounding sights; the busy marina at Grosseto is six kilometres from the hotel, and Maremma Natural Park is 10 kilometres away. Grosseto Station is seven kilometres from the hotel, and Rome Fiumicino Airport is 180 kilometres away, an approximate driving time of two hours.

You wrote "We will originally be starting our tour from Rome, so therefore do not want to go back that route and would like to travel up the coast to Grosseto[...]"

This is a contradiction, the train that Huitres recommends (and the others like it, at 09:24 and 15:24 and 17:24) take exactly that route - via Roma Termini and Ostiense and then up the coast. So you will see that route again.

The beauty of those trains rather than the many others on the schedule is that you can stay put all the way.

Only the late one, at 21:45 (arr. 01:46) bypasses Roma Termini but does stop in Ostiense.

Hi Taka,

The ES* train goes from Naples Centrale to Florence SMN in 3:36 hr.

See www.trenitalia.com.

Do you really want to stop overnight?

It takes longer than that just to get to Grosseto.
