Well if you take a plane from Madrid to Barcelona it would be faster but I found that the trains were pretty convenient. Taking the AVE to Cordoba for the day should be ok. I believe it took us about 2-3 hours to get to Sevilla so Cordoba would be much faster since it is closer to Madrid. Be sure to reserve your seats once you get to Madrid and you know when you want to go to Cordoba.
