train from Positano to Rome

He everyone: Please help! We'll be leaving Positano and heading to Rome in early July. Are we better off departing from Salerno or from Naples? We can get morning trains from either location but don't know if it will take much longer getting to Salerno or Naples for a morning train. Thanks for your help.

Hi sha,

Positano is closer to Naples than to Salerno.

You have to take the SITA bus in either direction. To get to Salerno, you also have to change in Amalfi.

Go to Naples.

Ira is one of my heros but in this case I must take exception. It is easier to access Salerno from Positano and only involves one transport. You have 3 choices--ferry boat, sita bus, or private driver. The train is then a straight shot into Rome.

Hi Bob,

Although my immediate response is to defer to your greater experience, are you sure about this?

Wouldn't it be less likely to make a morning train by taking the ferry (fastest way, I think) from Positano to Salerno.

My notes have the schedule as
Positano - Salerno (P.zza della Concordia): 5 E 70 min
10,00 ? 11,30 ? 13,30 ? 15,40 ? 17,15

You could take the bus to Sorrento and get the CV there. WWW.vesuviana.it

Thanks everyone. Based on your and other information we changed our plan. We cut 1 day from Positano and will travel to and overnight in Sorrento. We'll have the opportunity to experience another town and facilitate the trip to Rome the next morning. Your good advice is very appreciated.

Unless there has been a dramatic change the Naples train station is a nightmare. Hold on to your bags with 4 hands and know where you are going because you will get no help. You will pay someone to "help" you but you will not get help. Positano is to wonderful to skip a day because of trains.

If you must have a driver take you to the Naples train station.

Hi Michael: we appreciate your advice. We're not skipping Positano but decreasing our stay by 1 day. I wouldn't want to miss Positano. If we have a driver take us from Sorrento to the train station would that eliminate some of the hassle?

Sha - The Circumvesuviana from Sorrento to Naples is cheap and frequent. To go by taxi would cost €60.00+ ...

There is also a direct Sorrento-Rome bus service run by Marozzi.

Hope this helps ...

Hi sha,

If you do use a driver, you might as well stay in Positano. The cost will be about the same.

We used Renato Cuomo
Tel.(+39)339 16 12 081 or
(+39)081 802 30 37 -

and were very pleased with his service.
