If you are traveling on an IC ticket with no reserved seat, you can stop for a few hours and resume your trip on another IC. You have a certain amount of time to complete your trip from the time you validated (stamped) your ticket in the yellow machine before boarding. I'm not sure of the exact amount of time.
You can't break an ES trip--since you have a reserved seat you would lose your reservation.
