Train day trip from Edinburgh for taste of Highlands?

Maybe within a couple of hours each way, for view from the train, somewhere to have lunch and putter around a bit? We'll have been In Fife previously.

Dunkeld, Pitlochry or Blair Atholl.

Unfortunately AFAIK the historic ruins at Dunkeld Cathedral is still closed.
Pitlochry is a busy highland town with lots of shops and cafes
Blair Atholl has Blair Castle/Gardens
