neckervd - there are definitely no shortage of hikes in Switzerland!

I was armed with a map that I took at the funicular station, in addition to the photo I took at the start of my hike. I think my rookie mistakes are
1) I did not consult the map in detail beforehand, assuming there is only 1 route; which as you point out, is not the case
2) I assumed everyone else was going the same direction as me, and "blindly" following them. Those 3 hikers whom I was tagging along probably were heading to Figino (hence they were in Torello), as I never saw them again once I got on the grey route

Hopefully I will be better prepared next time!

Even though currently travelling myself, a TR about Switzerland jumps to attention!

I so envy your cheap and short flights ..

It is always interesting to see how people pull together their trips, and you really created a full and varied adventure.

I love the integrated transport in Switzerland, it really is so efficient.

A weird thing is my DH, who didn’t want to travel overseas anymore, because the long haul is just..so..long..
now he’s messaging saying ‘oh, I’d like to go back to that restaurant in Soglio’

Adelaidean thanks for taking the time to read my TR while you're busy on your trip. I am enjoying yours very much. Definitely a long way from Australia, but I think spending over a month in Europe makes it worthwhile. Any chance of you and DH flying Business class? I lucked out with Business class last month when I flew to Hong Kong (on Turkish Airlines via Istanbul). It made it so much more tolerable, though I still suffer from horrible jet lag.

If you enjoyed your hike, you did nothing wrong. Nobody us forced to take the "official" trails. Less known trails are often nicer and less crowded.
Just a hint for people who don't like the steep descent from Monte San Salvatore to Ciona (knee problems os so): take the bus from Paradiso to Carabbia (free with saver day pass) and reach Ciona from there.
Paradiso - San Salvatore OW costs CHF 12.50 with the Swiss half Fare Card, a Swiss Travel Pass or a Day Pass.
