Hi Steve

We have reservations in Santa Margherita in early October. We're staying at the Jolanda, as recommended by Bob the Navigator, who is well known on the forum for his travel expertise. I had originally planned to stay in CT but couldn't find any availability after a loooong search. After learning more about the area, I'm glad we expanded our horizons, so to speak. We'll get to see more of the Riviera than just the CT.
I love Santa Margherita Ligure. The road along the sea can get pretty busy in the summer, but I think it's a very beautiful town. You might also look into Camogli, which, I think, is about halfway between SML and Genoa.

Betsy! that's exactly when we'll be there - early October. If we wind up in S. Margherita, we'll have to get together for espresso.

Last September we spent the night in very small town of Brugnato at Hotel Dei Tigli off highway about 16 miles north of La Spazia, south of Genoa and just east of CT. Good, clean rooms with breakfast about $50 run by older mother who spoke no English but daughter excellent English. Brugnato is small 800 plus year old village with narrow streets, patron saint in town circle, and church bells calling all to Sunday morning mass. A tremendous overnight experience after the prior night in an expensive Florence hotel.

Camogli is a great place to stay in the Genoa area. It doesn't have its own freeway exit. You need to get on and off at nearby Recco. In Camogli we've stayed at the Cennobio dei Doge hotel. It's terrific, on a hill overlooking the harbor with a pool and its own beach (pebbles, not sand)The town is a quaint fishing village built into the side of the hill. Its houses are multi-colored and the whole thing is super picturesque. At night the lights twinkle in the harbor like a mini-acapulco. Recommended restaurants are Rosas in Camogli and Manuelina in Recco. Great fish. Latter has special local thin foccaccia-like cheese bread. Hotel in $200 range.

Thanks to everyone for your advice.
I checked out Camogli and really liked what I saw. Unfortunatley, the Cenobbio is booked when we want it, and despite all my searching, I didn't find any other serious hotels there. Are there any???

Bob, we'll be in the area from Sept 27 thru Oct 5. WE plan to spent 2-3 nights in or near Santa margherita, and 2 nights in Levanto.
What's so great about the Jolanda in Santa Margherita??

Steve,

There's a Hotel Casmona in Camogli that looks good and that I'm planning to stay at next year, though I haven't made reservations yet. I had a heck of a time finding a website for it, but I finally did. Unfortunately, I didn't bookmark it (che stupido!), so I'll have to do my searching all over again when I'm ready to reserve, but it's out there for the finding if you persevere.

Thank you, Steve. Maybe I didn't bookmark it because I thought it would be easy to remember.

Steve, I will be staying gratis at the Grand Hotel Portovenere, the best 4 star in town. They are grateful for the many clients I have sent them. I usually stay at the Albergo Paradiso for about $50 less--the better value in town. The Jolanda is also a value thing.
It is a nice 3 star at a good price.
