Hi Steve,

I just covered the whole area from Genoa to the Cinque Terre this past May. We stayed in Santa Margherita Ligure 2 nights and Riomaggiore in CT for 1 night. We also did day trips to Genoa, Portofino and Camogli from SML. I'd highly recommend SML as an ideal location. Camogli was indeed charming but as you've discovered, decent hotels are few and you can very easily take a day trip from SML. Forget staying in CT for Genoa it's too far away and logistically more difficult. When we were there in May the CT towns were also teeming with tourists - not sure if that would be the case in early October.

SML has many more hotels to choose from, lots of restaurants, a very picturesque waterfront promenade to walk along, street markets to browse etc. It is a little more upscale, more like a resort area than Camogli but not nearly as snooty as Portofino. (BTW, if you drive to Portofino go early or late...I've read that traffic backs up terribly on the way in. We went late afternoon and it worked out well.)

We stayed in the Hotel Fiorina in SML. We paid L135,000 for a 5th floor balcony room that looked over the town. It was clean, large and airy with a modern bathroom. There was no a/c but a ceiling fan kept the room very pleasant. I wouldn't think you'd need air in October anyway. Overall the hotel was very well kept and professionally run. Desk staff were helpful and we were able to find street parking close to the hotel. It's located just off a little piazza about 2 blocks from the waterfront.

Be happy to answer any other questions on the area.

Bev

Steve, the Laurin is a nice 4 star in a good location. I may prefer the Continental in that price range but either is a good choice.

Bob,

Is it possible to park on the street in the area of the Jolanda?? With their garage parking charge, the cost per day at the Jolanda isn't far behind the price at the laurin.
