Towns like Montalcino

My two favorite Italian towns (which also happen to be the only two small Italian towns I've ever been to) are Varenna on Lake Como and Montalcino in Tuscany.

Here's my question: My wife and I are going back to Italy in September, and would like to find a town we like just as much. I know Varenna and Montalcino have nothing in common, but they were both completely tranquil and beautiful and small ... any recommendations for small, pretty towns somewhere in the top 1/2 of Italy?

Thanks!!

I actually prefer Montepulciano over Montalcino - it is a about 30 mins east of Montalcino. Pienza is nice too.

Pienza - for its pretty setting, charming town & wonderful restaurants ... and for its proximity to Montalcino, Montelpulciano & other places you will want to visit while you're there!

Pienza and Montepulciano are always my two "go-to" towns whenever we are visiting Tuscany. Based on your favorites, I would also offer up Volterra, which I think is beautiful, has interesting shops and restaurants and is well-positioned high on a hill.

Not sure if you want to be in the same area, i.e. Tuscany, and just spend your evenings in a different small town. Or do you want to be ina different Italian region altogether? If so, Umbria has many beautiful small hilltowns which will fit your requests.

We spent 9 nights in Bevagna in Umbria, a very small town, about the size of Montalcino and we loved it. One of the few flat towns in Umbria. We stayed at Palazzo Brunamonti, a family run small hotel which was spotless and perfect and the people extremely helpful.

My absolute favorite is Orvieto, to me the quintessential "hill" town and not nearly as touristy as some others.

Modena is a smallish, attractive and "real" town, with good rail links to other nice towns like Parma and Mantova. Vicenza is an architect's dream but not touristy at all.
