I wouldn't include the amusement park either, they can do that at home. Parents paying for teens (at least the ones on my kids' trips) didn't mind a diversion but usually wanted it to be sightseeing oriented. Example: Venice- travel to Murano to see the glass-blowing. We would have balked at the amusement park (kids would love it).

Good morning dlpiano

I was thinking about Verona as a stop for your students. Verona, the setting for Shakespear's Romeo and Juliet is a beautiful and very photogenic city. Mucially it is most famous for its Arena Opera - these are spectacular opera performences held in a colloseum like ancient Roman arena. Unfortunately, the final performance in 2011 is September 3rd (Aida) which I believe will be before your trip, but if not, it would be a once in a lifetime experience for many of your students that shouldn't be missed. Even so, if in Verona you could visit the Arena and use your imagination for what an opera would be like in that unique setting. Otherwise, there are other opera, ballet and symphonic performances that take place nearly year round in the Teatro Filarmonico, one of Europe's oldest opera and concert halls, built in the early 18th century and restored to its original after nearly being destroyed in WW II. The kids would also most likely get a kick out of seeing Romeo and Juliet related tourist sites such as "the" balcony and "the" tomb. No one believes these are real, but they are fun none-the-less. Here is a link to some Verona photos so you can see for yourself.

I would second a visit to Cremona - we stopped there last year and it has a beautiful duomo with a large belltower (great "hike" for the kids) and an amazing violin museum (which we were unable to see). We also spend an hour with a violin maker ("liutaio" in italian, I think) who explained the process of making all types of violins, including how he buys from a guy who harvests the wood according to the cycles of the moon, and showing us several of his instruments that were in process.

Dlpiano: I just thought of a way for you to get in touch with my musical friend in Italy and Spain.
She has a website called "Musical Passages" I think if you google that you will find a way to get in contact. I'll bet you have friends in common. Tell her "Betsy sent you!"

Yes, I just checked it: www.musicalpassages.org
Perhaps she can help you with planning.
Good luck.
