"The Piano Teacher" with Isabelle Huppert (and Annie Girardot).

Excellent movie, not sure though, it will set you in the desired excitement.

You named the best one, but others include

"Before Sunrise", a romantic 1990's travelogue

"The Night Porter", with Dirk Bogarde and Charlotte Rampling (not for the faint-hearted)

"Mayerling", weak history about the suicide of Franz Josef's son and his lover

"Colonel Redl", really more about Hungarian history, although it does set the mood for the collapse of the Habsburgs

"Mahler", Ken Russell's biopic

Other than "Holocaust" (TV miniseries), all that comes to mind is "Amadeus", and most recently "ImmortalBeloved". I believed the opening scenes in "The Peacemaker" are in Vienna, but I may be wrong. One movie favorite of mine when I was growing up was "Sissi", some scenes looked like taken out of "The Sound of Music". Marc, your list sounds very interesting.

Deb, I know you may be new to the computer, but here is a helpful little hint. On your keyboard there are two keys -- one on each side -- that say Shift and probably have an arrow on them as well. I know this is misleading, but what those keys let you do is by pressing one of them (either) you can capitalize the next letter you key in. Try it sometime. It's easy and it will add immeasurably to your posts.

"Before Sunrise". An independent, somewhat pessimistic French graduate student and an awkward, somewhat romantic American "slacker." have a chance encounter aboard a Interrail train. This leads them to spend 14 hours of wandering and talking together in Vienna. They manage to find a strong connection despite differences in culture and background.

The site http://www.wien.gv.at/english/filmoffice/ lists a selection of films made in Vienna 1985 to 2001. I have selected further, to show only films made in English.

James Bond, "The Living Daylights"

"Anastasia". Two part TV film. 1986

"The Train" two part TV film. 1987

"The Three Musketeers" 1992

"Business for Pleasure" 1996.

"The Red Violin" 1997.

"Bride of the Wind" 2000

"All the Queen's Men" 2000.

No, it was filmed in the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London.

P.S. I love that movie. Someday, people will "discover" it.

I actually saw the movie "Before Sunrise" quite by accident and did enjoy it. I say quite by accident because my husband and I go to a least one movie every 10 or 15 years.

A friend had a free pass and took me as a guest. Now perhaps in 10 years or so I will see another movie.
