TOURING BARCELONA $ SURROUNDING AREA

We are 4 active seniors from the US and we are going to be in Barcelona in June for 6 days. We were thinking of 2-3 days in Barcelona and then taking a train or bus to some area (4-5 hours max) from Barcelona and spend a couple of days there. Any suggestions? Would we be better to stay in Barcelona and take a few day trips to surrounding areas?

Barcelona is beautiful place with numerous and interesting sights. You might wish to read a bit about the city before deciding what to do. There are several day trips to consider - Girona, Montserrat, Sitges and more.

A 3 hour train ride will take you to Valenicia or even Madrid.

I really like the use of the $ sign. You are limited if you are not going to drive, but there is always hope. You might be interested in downloading a copy of Maribel's Guide to Barcelona, which has some interesting recommendations.

Are you flying in and out of Barcelona? If so I think you could spend the whole time based there and do day trips. There is alot to do in Barcelona and the day trips mentioned by danon are all pleasant - Figueres and the Dali museum are interesting too. I don't think a car is necessary. You might want to consider flying into Barcelona, training to Madrid and flying home from there - they are very different cities. And as Robert mentions, the maribel guides are full of good suggestions for sights, hotels, restaurants etc. in both cities.

There is plenty to keep you busy for six days in BCN, but you'd be better off doing day trips if you want variety. Montserrat, cava country and one of the coastal towns in either direction would make pleasant day trips.

Staying six days in a Barcelona apartment is the best option. And depending on what you choose it can offer much more comfort and space as well as a location that makes you feel at home in this fascinating city.
