Tour of Pompeii From Naples

Will be in Napoli for a few days in late October and wish to take a guided Tour of Pompeii with transportation. I would like a recommendation on a reliable tour operation. Does anyone have a suggestion?

It might be just as efficient to take the train to Pompeii and hire a guide at the site itself.

To lead tours inside Pompeii the guides have to be licensed for it. Many times an outside tour company just provides you with transport and connects you to a licensed guide at Pompeii. You can take the Circumvesuviana train on your own for less than 3€ (about 30 minutes) and join a guide at the entrance (across the street from the Pompeii Scavi train station). There are always licensed guides forming groups at the entrance. It's also possible to rent the audio guide at the entrance.

Good advice but I've taken it before. This is however a different question.

Perhaps narrowing it down might help.

Is this for an I, a WE or a small GROUP?

Are you looking for a private guide and driver?

Are you looking for a big group bus tour?

If for a small group Context Naples does private 1/2 day tours with transportation for ~ 610.

Good Luck.

We (family of 4) recently took the train from Naples to Pompeii. It was easy to navigate and cheap, but be careful. A man tried to nudge our teenage daughter off the train. Be sure to take the train on to Sorrento in the afternoon. It is beautiful and stop at for Gelato at David's (just left of train station). We did our own self- tour of Pompeii in about 3 hours and were fine without a guide.

Also I would suggest that you visit the National Archeological Museum in les before you visit Pompeii. We stayed at the Hotel Piazza Bellini right around the corner from there. It was a quaint hotel in the center of Naples and lovely.

Have you tried Trip Advisor or emailing the Naples tourist office?

Nope, but I will. I was looking for a personal recommendation from the knowledgeable people on this board but that is not going to happen.

I'm sure that Context would arrange a private tour for you but it would be very expensive. I was looking at their site and it seemed that the price was about E1,000 between the guide and private car.

I agree with you RJD, I think the only time this type of private tour with transportation ever pops-up here is when someone just drops in for info for a Naples 12hr cruise stop.

Perhaps you might have some better luck with cruise forum/messageboards?

Maybe google naples shore excursion will get you some hits?

Also perhaps a 2 part booking on your part might also work?

A few people here have posted the emails of licensed Pompeii guides you can reserve to meet you at the site.
So you would have a good guide recommendation which is the most important.

And then see if you can google a 'Naples based' car service for transportation?

adrienne; Context Naples posted I believe 330e "Per Party" plus a seperate 270e for the car/driver service?

I assumed that 330e was for a very small Group and not 'Per Person' but "Party" can go both ways.

Most people using local guides/transport for Pompeii on this board seem to use ones based in Positano or Amalfi as that is where they are usually staying. Have you tried asking the Naples tourist board? They should have a list of tours to join and a list of private guides.

I guess I read the information too quickly yesterday and thought it was per person; it must be E330 per group. Even so, it's expensive.
