Hi Maria,
we had the same charming and enthusiastic guide, Fiorella S.! Unfortunatly vesuviusvspompeii doesn't do walking tours of Venice and we would like to have the same quality service.
We are planning a trip there in late october.
Can anyone recommend a guide with good English and strong background in history and art able to fulfill all our expectations? Somebody informative and entertaining, not boring
thanks
Ricky

It depends on several things: how much money have you got; have you got the time and ability to do some research ahead of time; how do you like crowds. If you can afford a private guide I think that would be great. We caught bits and pieces of some private tours and they were wonderful. The large tours seemed like they would only be worth while if you need or want to just go in cold - no previous reading.

The brochure they give out with the tickets is available on line to read in advance if you so choose, and there are many websites full of information and virtual tours. If you can spend a couple hours before the trip and print out some info to take with you then you can save the money, avoid the crowds and still get as much out of it. The audio guide/brochure are pretty good but it takes longer to see the site if you are doing the research on the spot so to speak.

richardshall, start your own thread with your request for a guide in Venice. Knowledgeable people might not be reading a Pompeii thread.

Mimar - richardshall's post is from July. This thread was topped by mjm752 advertising a tour guide (first and only post).

I vote guide as well

The main problem is "How to find and choose a good guide?"...

It is generally difficult to have the choice between different guides...
