What are the top 3 most beautiful cities in Switzerland?

Do you truly want "cities"?

The beauty of Switzerland, I think, rests in the countryside -- out on a mountain trail or walking along a beautiful lake.

If you want cities, I guess I would say

Bern
Luzern
Basel

My mom said Locarno was the most beautiful place she had ever been.
We are headed to Switzerland this summer and are staying in Lugano. My mom is still mad that we didn't make the reservations in Locarno!

I agree with Swanda that the mountains, not the cities, are the most beautiful part of Switzerland. We loved the small town of Wengen... Gorgeous mountain views and close to great hiking. Any of the smaller towns in the Lauterbrunnen area would fit this description.

The beauty of the Swiss cities/towns rivals the beauty of the mountains IMO. It's just a totally different kind of beauty.

Are we talking about cities or towns? Because Switzerland hardly has more than a handful of places that could be qualified as "cities". Of those I think Bern is my #1. Luzern #2, if you call it a city, #3 would be a tie between Zürich and Basel.

If we talk about the towns, too, then the list would be totally different.

Of course unless one has been to every Swiss city one could not answer the question as posed but on my visiting just about every well-known Swiss city I would ranks these as my top 3 -

1- Lucerne - because of its setting on a lovely fjord-like lake.
2 - Bern
3 - Zurich

Thanks all for the reply. I have limited time for the Switzerland trip (4 days 3 nights), guess I have to cover the cities portion. I acknowledged countryside is the most beautiful scene of Switzerland. I saw the enchanted countryside while travel road trip from Italy to Mt. Titlis 8 years ago.

The most beautiful Swiss towns have less than 40.000 inhbatants. There are a lot of them. If it must be a town with more than 100.000 inhabitants, I would say
1. Berne
2. Lausanne
3. Lucerne
