If you are like most Americans, you will want to bring a few of your own washcloths for shower and bath. I've found that the washcloth is not a common object used by most Europeans. Just bring a few cheap ones and leave them behind.

Travel packet of disposable wipes and small bottle of gel hand sanitizer (Purell?)

a phrasebook with phonetic pronounciation, Italian is so fun to speak and so well received even in my horrible accent, it is great to actually have a few phrases to say.

Gee, jgarvey, you could have bought a bottle of water at the Munich airport with your credit card! I know, because I did just that, since there are no drinking fountains in European airports (at least the ones I've been in).

In any event:
Passport
ATM card
Credit card
Toiletries if you're allergic to a lot of things.
Confirmations for hotels, etc.

And, most importantly, what Ira and Bobthenagivator said!

Oh yes, If you are renting a car bring a few CD's... After a few days of listening to music that we could not understand we were fortunate to find a cassette (14 yrs. ago) of Johnny Cash; for the remainder of our time in Italy, Johnny traveled with us. Now whenever I hear him, my first thought is our trip to Italy!

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but comfortable, flat shoes are essential...especially for walking around hilltowns with cobbled streets!

Handiwipes!!! I found the bathrooms pretty yucky, so when we would stop to eat, we would just use the handiwipes before we ate. Just the thought of all of those hand rails and door handles-eeewww!!

Washcloths! I buy a stack of really cheap ones at a dollar store and throw them away as I travel. They'll last a couple of days in a plastic bag without smelling but by the third day they're pretty rank.

For all of our travels: I have a small photo album (4x6 size) in which I have a few favorite family photos and copies of:
1. our passports
2. driver's licenses
3. medical powers of attorney
4. living wills; and
5. emergency phone numbers (family, credit cards, bank, medical, dental, travel insurance company, airlines 800 numbers)
6. prescriptions for meds and eyeglasses
7. loyalty program numbers (airlines and hotels, so I don't have to carry their cards)
8. mailing labels for postcards and packages home.

I don't usually buy many souvenirs and when I do they are small because we travel lightly with one duffel bag each. I pack a small plastic box that I can use for these purchases. The rigid plastic protects the items and they also don't get lost. I can keep the receipts in there also so they can be pulled together at the end for the customs report.

Medical Power of Attorney will not be not necessarily be recognized in Italy if the directive goes against Italian Law. The Catholic Church (the Vatican) still rules regarding health care matters in Italy.

Regarding tissues..Tempo (the Italian tissue) is wonderful. My family and I always bring back a big package of pocket size packages from Italy to have here at home.

Husband (for the driving)
Me .....(for the navigation)
Bubble wrap for our ceramics
Antiseptic hand wash
Clothes peg to shut the curtains in any room
Corksgrew, glasses and plates for any picnic(or room picnic)
A pashmina for my shoulders for breakfast on my balcony, mornings and afternoons around my neck for walking and evenings for the glamour factor while dining.
Second the washcloth anywhere in
the world.
Lots of Euros...you are a long time dead!
An attitude that you are only there for a short time and a spontaneous decision not to do something for the sake of a few euros can be regretted for a long time on your return...So do it!!
