Top 10 in the Scottish Highlands...

You have 5 days in northwest Scotland. You have a rental car. You want to avoid tourist traps. You want breathtaking views. Great food. Good whiskey. Etc. Tell me what you would do... Where you would stay, eat, make love...

Glen Moriston Arms hotel, not great views but a really nice inn with great food. Near Loch Ness.
Plockton.
The Isle of Skye for a few days, venturing down back roads.
Loch Awe.

I haven't been to Skye (one of these days, sigh!).

I recommend driving North from Edinburgh. Stop at the Caithness glass factory outside Perth and buy some well priced seconds, then continue on to Queens View, Piltlochry (2 distilleries there), Blair Castle at Blair Atholl, shop at House of Bruar and continue on the road to Inverness. Veer off from Inverness and see Culloden Battlefield, the Clava Cairns stones and Cawdor Castle (sorry Macbeth never lived there).

You should not miss Glamis and Scone Castles.

Whatever you do, have fun.

Three words for you, Jack: ISLE OF SKYE! Very few tourist traps, beautiful views, a distillery, friendly residents. It's the best! We stayed at Heronfield B&B with Chris and Tim Moore ([email protected]).

Enjoy!

Speaking of Skye, anybody know anything about, or stayed at, Dunthulm Castle Hotel? If so, please share your knowledge or experience.

If you are going to be in the Inverness or Culloden Battlefield area, please do not miss Pluscarden Abbey near Elgin. One of the most beautiful, serene and venerable sites I have ever seen. You won't be sorry.

North-west;car; 5 days;view;stay;eat ...top 10 ?

If I take you at your word on this, your major problem will be good (as opposed to palatable) food northwest of Inverness. The islands which are stunning would take too long.

Views:- Torridon; Stac Pollaidh; Scourie; Cape Wrath; Mellon Udrigle; Applecross/Pass of the Cattle(Bealach nam Bo); Summer Isles; Gairloch/Poolewe; Handa Island and Glen Affric

Stay:- Applecross Inn; Pool House Hotel; Summer Isles Hotel; B&B opposite Handa I can't remember the name of. Shieldaig Hotel. Obinan Croft

Eat:- Applecross Inn; Badachro Inn; Pool House Hotel; Summer Isles Hotel; Obinan Croft;
