Toledo or not?

I am not sure whether to make Toledo a priority on my forthcoming (first and probably only) trip to Madrid.

I have 3 nights - 2 1/2 days, in Madrid and the hotel is already booked. I can't cancel a night as it was a 'special' - so I don't have the option of a night in Toledo - but I can't decide whether to make a day trip. It looks and sounds like a beautiful town but I only have 2 1/2 days in total.

So, should I make Toeldo a priority? Thank you.

Hi - why not see how you like Madrid? If you're lovin' it & doing the nightlife every night, don't stress it.

Otherwise, yes - I'd recommend you hit Atocha & do a daytrip. Hubby and I stayed at the Parador there for an anniversary trip, and a quick daytrip (with lunch/tapas at the Parador for its breathtaking view) will really blow the cobwebs out - La Mancha is a gorgeous region.
HTH, have fun!

I think Toledo is definitely worth a visit, but 2 1/2 days just may not be enough time. There is so much to see and do in Madrid, Toledo may have to wait. I suggest spending your first day in Madrid and if you don't have anything left to see, go to Toledo the next day!

Hi bbib. My 2 cents. As you know, Madrid is a big city, while, Toledo is more quaint (although in my opinion, quite touristy). You didn't mention whether you'd be anywhere else on your trip. I believe there's plenty to occupy your two and a half days in Madrid, but, depending on what you like and where else you may or may not visit, Perhaps you'll feel like seeing more than the big city. If you do, Toledo can easily be done as a day trip. Have fun.

Thanks guys for the advice - think I will spend a day and half packing in as much as I can in Madrid and then consider Toledo.

Iregeo - Its just a short break - not going anywhere else this time. Saving up for a trip back to the States.

Hi bbib. Where are you planning to go within the States?

Don't get me wrong -- I love visiting within my country, but living on the west coast, I'm SO envious of where you Europeans can visit on your short breaks!

Have a great time!

Iregeo: Yes we are likely having so much on our door step in Europe. But I would trade places with you any day.

A few years ago I went to Washington DC and traveled around Virginia, Pennsylvannia and then up to Niagra and then last year I did my dream trip to Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Arches, Bryce, Zion etc - it was the BEST and I am desperate to get back. I also want to go to yesomite and california - I adore the USA and would love to live there.. It is such a diverse and wonderful place and Americans are great. love, love, love it!

bbib - I live in Southern California. Perhaps someday we can trade -- at least for a week or 2!

Iregeo: You never know, that would be cool to do one day. I wonder if any other Fodorites do house swaps?!
