What info does my son need on his trip to Europe with regard to tipping standards? I would appreciate assistance on how it differs to the US with regard to who to tip, and how much. Thanks all!

Where - Europe is a big place and different countries have different customs.

In general - "service" is often included in restaurant bills so tips are much less than what is normal in the States. The amount to tip cab drivers, maids, etc will vary from country to country . . . . .

I'm an Aussie so tipping is unusual. However I round up to the nearest 10. For eg. if your bill was E43 I would make it E50. As a rule of thumb I work on maximum of 10% of the bill. My belief is that tipping is a reward for service above the standard. An indifferent or inattentive waiter should not be tipped!

In France, you just leave a little extra change since serving staff are paid a normal wage. Four of us were traveling around last week and had numerous restaurant meals across eastern France. The bill was normally 50-80€ and I think the biggest tip we left anywhere was 1.20€.

Tips are not expected in ethnic restaurants in France.

to make things easier.. tip at least HALF as much LESS than in the USA and you might be better than OK most everywhere.

The way prices have been increasing in Europe, and knowing that service is included in the bill. I do not really feel like tipping and the different service providers do not expect it any more.
It has to be something really special to deserve a tip.
Do not be shy in not tipping.

Why do you assume service is included in the bill?
Unless it specifically says so it isn't. Even if it is there is no harm in showing your appreciation for good service.
Leaving a tip is always appreciated, but just round the bill up to a reasonable figure, or say keep the change if it is a small amount. If the service was very good then leave a bigger tip of you wish, but never more than 10%.

Aside: China, tip 3%, Hong Kong, tip 10-15%. Remember! If you plan to return to that site..tip at the correct or accepted size. A recent story about the Queen Mary and the Normandie told of first class personnel earning more in tips than the ship's officers. Try this one: US military, Enlisted clubs customers always tipped more than the officer club customers.
