Three one-day trips from Garmisch

We will be renting an apartment in Garmisch for a week in late June. Arriving and leaving by train, but thought we'd rent a car, probably just for three days -- other days for hiking and adventures in the immediate area.
If one day we do Neuschwanstein and Linderhof, and one day explore Mittenwald and Oberammergau (plus any other nearby towns?), what is a suggested third day trip.

Also can anyone suggest the ideal one day itinerary for exploring the castles?

We have spend quite a bit of time in Berchtesgaden, Salzburg, Innsbruck, and will be Munich for several days afterwards.

I would think you could do Linderhof, Oberammergau, and Attau (sp) all in one day.

AS well as Newschanstein? I thought that would be combined with Linderhof? No?

From Oberammergau I visited the Ettal and Linderhof and that took one day. The grounds of Linderhof are huge but worth the walk. If you have not already visited Hallstatt in Austria it is definitely worth a visit. I would love to just stay there.

Here's my notes on Neuschwanstein: Gorgeously carved wood furniture; fun castle. Walked back down for lunch, then walked to Hohenschwangau castle, Ludwig’s family home. Beautiful interior and paintings. Liked Neuschwanstein furniture better but Hohenschwangau had more furnished rooms. - Failed to put this in my notes but we walked to St. Mary's Bridge for a terrific view. All of this takes a day.

Patrick:

Here is how I have done it fom Garmish

Early ride out to Fussen. See Neuchwanstein in the morning (do not miss the 'marionbruck' for a great view of the castle) Head back along the back roads and do schloss Linderhof. Should be plenty for Day 1

Day 2: Do Oberammergau and Weisskirch in the morning, head back to Garmish and out to Mittenwald, maybe try and squeeze in Seefeld

Day 3 Lets see:
Head over to Kitzbhuel or
Head to Berchtesgarden or

sorry Pat..hit the wrong button

I think Halstatt might be too far for a day trip! Oops I just saw that you have spent time in Berchtesgarden, sorry for the rec. Whatever you decide make sure you have at least one meal in the Frauendorfer!

Yes, I noticed that Halstatt is about 3 or more hours each way, and oddly enough I just posted on another thread a couple of days ago that although Halstatt is high on my list of "must sees", I'd never want to do a day trip there -- would want to experience early morning and late night there as well.

In reviewing these suggestions and some from a search I'm thinking now of the following.

One day go to Neuschanstein and do the walk down to Hohenschangau and the castle, St. Mary's Bridge, Marionbuck (?),etc. Take our time and then spend the afternoon in Fussen and see the musical of Mad Ludwig there that night (being a huge theatre fan). How bad is the drive at night back to Garmisch from there? I'd assume the loop down into Austria is the quickest way back?

Another day, thought we'd go to Linderhof in the morning, explore the gardens as well, then head to Oberammergau for lunch, Weisskirch. . .and what is Ettal?

The third day, we'll head to Mittenwald and maybe visit a couple other smaller towns. Any suggestions?
What is Seefeld?

Thanks for the replies. I wonder if this site were actually working if I would have been getting a whole lot more, though.

We really enjoyed Lindau at the Bodensee (Lake Constanz) at the German/Austrian/Swiss border. Daytripped there last June.

Did Oberammergau, Mittenwald, Oberstdorf and the Wiesskirche on another daytrip ; Neuschwanstein/Hohenschwangau and Linderhof was another daytrip.

Ettal is a small Bavarian town nestled in the German Alps. We stopped there on our way to Obberammergau from Munich and my husband had to drag me out of the stores that lined the main street. Turns out the residents of Ettal are descendants of the wood workers, carvers, welders, and craftmen that worked in Ludwig's palaces and summer retreats. It shows. I mean the beauty of the craftmanship of the woorkwork and other items you find in this town is amazing. If that wasn't enough good reason for a visit, Ettal has a beautiful basilica and a Benedictine Monastery, definitely worth the visit. Have lunch in the small restaurant across the monastery. The beer is made by the Benedictine monks. Some pics at http://www.kloster-ettal.de/kloster/...undbilder.html
