Thiva?
Been in Athens since Sun eve (3 full days including today, Weds.) Departing Greece 6:30 am Sun. Covered most highlights (walked our a...s off). Had a great time but getting a little bored. Deciding if we should a) check out friday get 2 night hotel in Delphi or maybe Thiva, see Delphi Friday, do (?) on Saturday, drive to airport early Sunday. b) Just do daytrip to Delphi and spend Sat in Athens then bus to airport early Sun. Opinions?

Thebes (as the city the Greeks call Thiva is called in English) is mostly a dull dump in the middle of nowhere - but where a lot of important Greek legends are set. I've never found anything worth spending time on in the area for.
Delphi is a slightly less dull modern town close to the site of the classical-era spiritual centre of the Greek world. The excavated sanctuary, surrounded by dozens of embassies from individual Greek states is one of THE great archaeological sites in the world. It's also spectacularly sited.
The choice is about as much of a no-brainer as between a weekend in Manhattan and a weekend in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

As it turned out, I rented a car Friday morning and took a day trip to Delphi.
After Delphi we had a few hours of daylight remaining so we drove over to Galaxida, thank you Mariha2912 for that tip.
Galaxida is a lovely town with a promenade along the Gulf of Corinth. There were a lot of families out strolling and eating at the numerous restarants along the water. There's nice views looking across to a forested park and looking out towards the mountains. (Although it took me a while to drive out of there, what with the narrow winding streets; I had to back up out of one when I came face to face with another car, LOL.)
We chose one of the restaurants and had a fine grilled fish dinner complete with bread, salad, wine and apple slices and halvah for dessert for only $35 Euros.
It was very scenic driving through the mountains to get there and back (very curvy roads high up, not for the feint of heart, LOL.)
When we got back to Athens around midnight, I was able to park free on the street (I asked someone to translate the signs) then I returned the car in the morning.
We spent our last day in Athens seeing some of the things we had missed previously; Keramikos, Apostolou Pavlou Avenue, Central Market and dinner at Epirus; having some delicious traditional Greek Easter dishes (goat soup and liver and other assorted goat innards wrapped up in intestines, which tasted a lot better than it sounds LOL). We also passed through an interesting street scened where people were folks were hawking their cheeses and goat for Easter. We bought some Naxos cheese and saved it to eat at the airport at 4:30 AM Sunday morning.
I actually made a sandwich of some sweet bread the hotel was giving out after Midnight mass, the Naxos Cheese, and a smashed hard boiled egg as my breakfast Sunday.

Still jet lagged. That should read "We also passed through an interesting street scene where folks were hawking their cheeses and goat for Easter." (I wish Fodors provided the ability to edit a post after it's submitted.)
