Seriously, emd3, buy your travelling companion some ear plugs and an eye shade/sleep mask in the morning. If you are not too hung over, that is. Tell her/him to use them or you are splitsville. It is your vacation too.

Wow, this post is topped again! When I saw it at the top, I thought "Maybe Barb joined a 12 step program and decided she needed to confess that the whole trip report was a ruse." But no, I still think Barb could not have made this up. It is just too real and funny.
I am going to read the whole thing again now, from the top.

This is interesting thread and has given my otherwise boring Sunday afternoon a bit of a jolt. I ran onto this thread while researching for an upcoming trip with my our best friends. Ten years ago I had a miserable first trip to Italy. It was with a friend that I had only known a couple of years, and she invited two friends of hers. It was just before I was to have a TKR and I probably wasn't in the best of walking condition but remember only staying behind when there were many steps involved. They were mean spirited and took on the sorority mentality, after many hours of walking one evening in the rain and legs feeling a bit tired I suggested a taxi - my biggest mistake not walking out to the taxi stand and hailing one myself, I walked on. With many trips under my belt and new confidence I spend a great many hours helping other people with whatever I can find out about travel. I will never travel again with a group of women, I turned down a trip this year to Spain with three because of the flashback of 10 years ago. The best travel companion is someone who loves you and if you are having a hard time or a bad day they are there for you. I imagine that these women missed out on lots of wonderful memories because they were so caught up in the turmoil. Nothing anymore miserable than spending your money having a pissy time with a bunch of spoiled brats. Good story, too bad it is real. I am happy to have two bionic knees now and I am ready to see Italy in a fun way.

We have already made a vow to only travel as a couple from now on. Even with the best of friends the troubles begin to explode exponentially the more in the group. After many years of being together, we have worked out how to deal with one or the other having a pissy day, settle schedule problems and how to continue with the trip without pouting. (Well, I do pout longer than she does, but she is patient with me.)

Hi cruiseluv,
I'm always thrilled when this old thread is back. Funny, I just had a great weekend at J's house and D and Knowitall came to breakfast. We were reminiscing about our trip to Italy. I'm glad they do have good memories of our time together and I'm glad that friendships were not destroyed because of it. Time heals all wounds, BUT I will never be tempted to do it again.
YES!! I'm doing the Camino, starting Oct 4th. My DIL is joining me. She's a dear and we are very compatible, so keeping my fingers crossed it all goes well. I'm going to start another thread that lists our itinerary and hotels, preparations, etc. We decided not to do albergues, but I hope it doesn't take away from the experience.

Barb, that's great!!! Please yes, do post a separate thread so I can live vicariously through your preparations. Trust me, staying in private accommodations will NOT detract from the experience!
Buen Camino!

Thanks for the report, Barb!
I almost always travel solo. Lately I've been wondering if I should do more traveling with friends and family, but this report has given me a lot to think about... and also makes me want to go to Rome. Thanks!

I throughly enjoyed your travel report. I just came back from a month long trip in Italy with four days in Paris. I had a travel companion from hell. Thank you posting your report. It was therapeutic for me to read.

Could you please give us some examples of your "-- travel companion from hell's" antics, Sunny, and how you handled them? I have heard that a roll of one Euro coins in a sock can work wonders, but perhaps you have more subtle tactics to suggest.
