I am rather sorry I bought up GPS and cellphones as an aid to travel. I have used maps for decades to travel and rarely use the GPS in my car but find my iPhone to be of great help in traveling. One can even buy an inexpensive android phone to use for travel with the easy addition of a SIM card in many countries.
We visited the Vatican on Monday and I must say I was surprised by the crowds. In comparison to the last time I visited in November of 1999 I would say that there were 3 to 4 times as many people. My LUXE guide recommends touring in November, January and February and I can see why. Fortunately we are not doing most of the major tourist sites. Have a cooking class tomorrow.

Sugarmaple, I'm with Telus but I guess I'm not pay as you go as they call it. I don't have a contract, I just pay month to month but it is a set rate and I can add travel packages. However regarding the locked phone, I think with the new regulations phone companies are required to unlock your phone now if you request it.

Rome has many more visitors in general than it had 20 years ago, but Monday is a particularly crowded day for the Vatican Museums. First, they're closed on Sundays, so Monday gets a lot the people who are in Rome for only a few days and couldn't visit on Sunday. Second, Monday is a day when most other museums in Rome are closed. I would only visit the Vatican Museums on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday in the dead of winter. I've been there four times already and never yet managed to visit at a time that wasn't unpleasantly crowded. Monday is bad for the reasons I mentioned above. Wednesday is bad because so many people go to the Vatican that day to attend the Pope's General Audience; you could try to go during the General Audience. Saturday is bad because the Museums are closed on Sundays, and also because a lot of people don't work on Saturdays.

Oh dear, it doesn't sound like you enjoyed yourself very much. Maybe just go to Disneyland next year?

1 - I dislike cigarette smoke but I love travel and seeing different cultures. If everywhere was like Liverpool I wouldn't bother going anywhere else.

2 - True, but don't go to a city for fresh air, go to the coast. Cities are generally full of fumes and smelly people and garbage. You were in ROME, baby! Chill.

3 - What, getting lost is the best part of wandering the city! When lost, I found the Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Trevi, the Pantheon and the Antica gallery in Palazzo Barberini, where I saw my first ever Caravaggio (an experience more memorable than losing my virginity, by far)

4 - October isn't off season, there's no off season, why did you think there was?

5 - Yeah, this is hellishly annoying, I have to agree.
