LHR has been handed over to commercial interests. BAA is more interested in creating a shopping mall than a facility that is comfortable for the passenger. shopping comes first, passenger last.

of course, the importance of shopping has grown in almost all airports. however, i have not seen such dichotomy between the general airport facility and and shopping facilities as i do at LHR.

i can't think of another airport with such upmarket shopping/eating and such downmarket general facilities. shame.

Is that why liquids bought at Heathrow duty free shops are allowed on the plane?

Cato: when you get back from fighting in Iraq we'll discuss it. Perhaps they'll let you fly through Heathrow on the way..that is, if you GET back.

What I love about Heathrow:

World class people watching
The pub serving huge glasses of wine
Smoking
British tabloids at the newstand
Public shower facilities

Actually ...I think it has a few good points:

- I love the London Lounge in T3 - great place to relax before a flight.
- The AC arrivals lounge is very handy to shower and change before traveling onwards or going to meetings in London.
- There is Fast-Track security and immigration for BC passengers
- Of ALL the many, many airports I have traveled to, LHR gets my bags to me in the shortest time

I love stocking up on all the British weekly women's magazines that cost under a pound each. I ration these out to myself when I am in France so I have something in english to read while I'm on vacation but something that's exotic as well.

I look forward to these silly magazines all year, they are the only thing I buy for myself on some trips.

They're why I'm always happy when I know we will be connecting through Heathrow.

Now you all know my guilty pleasures

I agree about the bags waiting for you when you get to the claim area. I use miles for upgrades so I zip through the arrivals (immigration?) queue.

Leaving, AA's Admiral's Club is just terrific & I also like all the shopping available. I love those teeny tiny cans of soft drinks available in the Admiral's Club as well as the big selection of teas.

I like the workout that my legs get by walking from the plane to immigration and then on to the Underground station. After a flight over the Atlantic I need the exercise.

"What do you love about Heathrow?"

"Lemon drops. And shortbread."

"Oh. Nothing, in other words."

If Heathrow is the only place they're sold, then I recant.

But I doubt it.

That it's only 70 minutes to Oxford, as opposed to 2 hours to Gatwick or even longer to Stansted or Luton.

And as somebody might have mentioned already above, also a nice individual cabines with shower + wc. After my 11hr flight, it was so refreshing.
