xxx, you have GOT to be kidding about the Tower! It is over 1,000 years old and totally fascinating. Other places can be debated, but skipping the Tower of London? - No way!!!!!

Sia sweetie dahling.....Patsy and Edina wouldn't be caught dead shopping at Harrods, not even for food. They did their shopping at Harvey Nic's Fifth Floor. Much posher than Harrod's!

In defense of the poster who first mentioned Cleopatra’s Needle…most seem to have missed the point entirely. As I understood it certainly wasn’t that you won’t see things of such antiquity anywhere else, the point was that one tends to just stumble upon such finery without warning in London. No hype, no ticket booths, no vendors, just, “oh yes, that’s been there for a while, hasn’t it?” a very laze-faire attitude among Londoners.

Yes, the sister needle is in Central Park, NYC. Interesting stories concerning how both were shipped in and erected.

But let’s be fair, New York isn’t what you’d call “loaded” witch such antediluvian curios, is it?
Maybe the reason there was no hullablloo in London about the obelisk was that the shops were already full of Royal Family teatowels, David Beckham jerseys, Robbie Williams posters, and plastic replicas of the Tower. As I see it, the first Cleopatra's Needle poster was saying that London is a thoroughly refined and tasteful place and that anyone who doesn't love it is a boorish Orlando-lover. Questionable.

The Tower of London seemed overrated to me! Like the Changing of the Guard, it's good to do once, but never again.

Many historical sites are interesting to the degree that you know something about them. I first visited London as a college student and of course, we went to the Tower. Mildly interesting, check it off the list.

Several decades later, when I had developed an interest in Tudor and Elizabethan English history, I went to the Tower again. This time I stood in awe at the Watergate, where Anne Boleyn was delivered to the Tower never to be free again.

There have been several recent threads about whether it's worth it to visit Stonehenge. Yes, it's just a pile of rocks, unless you know something about it and are interested in pre-historic ruins.

Samuel Johnson said "... When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford."

And I say, "If you want to go to Disneyland, you don't have to go to France."

Regarding the previous comment about obelisks:

Almost every neighborhood in Rome has an ancient Egyptian obelisk. I saw at least 7 of them while walking around the city. Rome also has numerous other ancient ruins (many more than London) that you can see from the street without paying entrance fees.

I also love London. But if ancient ruins are what you want to see, London is not the best place to visit for this purpose.
