Joe,

I just checked my show literature and the Matisse/Picasso exhibit closed two days ago. I thought it was running through August which wouldn't have helped you anyway. Apologies for perpetrating a fraud and I am sorry you missed seeing it. It was lovely.

One thing I would have skipped in London would have been afternoon tea at the Brown's Hotel. Yes, the service was great, the atmosphere wonderful, but all in all, I thought it was extremely overpriced and overrated. I much more preferred afternootea at the Orangery at Kensington Palace.

Janene: Could you be more pompous? On the one hand you say different strokes for different folks, but then you suggest that those who don't like London are the kind of people who like Orlando. Geez. Hey, I don't like London as much as London, but I'm not going to put someone down just because he/she likes London. But I guess that says it all, doesn't it....

Re-analyze - re? Whoooo. Too funny. Some of you never learn - you put on the old grammarian hat, step out on the tree limb, and somebody cuts you off.

"I know of no other city where one might just be strolling along and see something thousands of years old, Cleopatra’s Needle in this case, without a bunch of hullabaloo..."

Ummm...New York? There's another obelisk, also called Cleopatra's Needle, near the Metropolitan Museum.

Somebody mentioned this already but I think the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace is an utter waste of time! On the other hand, I LOVE the Tower of London, St. Paul's Cathedral, and the Cabinet War Rooms.

The Dungeon. Felt like an adult that crashed a Halloween haunted house.

Elvira - regarding the Tate Modern, I did like the fact that they give a little more explanation on the pieces than your typical museum. Agree that most is not "my type" of art, but found it interesting trying to decipher what the artist was trying to convey. also, I did think the space itself was pretty cool with the huge entry and the view over the Millenium Bridge (fortunately the Warhol exhibit was showing when I was there which I did enjoy).

"I know of no other city where one might just be strolling along and see something thousands of years old, Cleopatra’s Needle in this case, without a bunch of hullabaloo..."

Well Rome would also fit this statement as would a whole lot of other places.

Ok, I'll admit it, I liked the London Dungeon...so shoot me. It was fun (of course we were there at Halloween).

Madame T's is a waste of time and money.

The Tower Bridge Experience - only worth doing if you have a heritage pass and can get in free - and then I'm not sure it was worth the time.

The Banqueting Hall - With Heritage Pass a good way to rest the feet while you sit in a....HALL...and listen to a 25 minute spiel about what happened there.

Changing of the Guards - Glad I saw it once but not worth seeing twice. Plus it takes up half a day.

Now for things I could see over and over:

National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and Observatory.

The Tower - impossible to see it all in one day. Like to return each time and take in a small part.

Westminster - Always worth a visit and stay for an Evensong Service.

National Gallery, Tate, and even the Tate Modern!

London always has something worth seeing and doing. Anybody that would find this city boring must be fairly boring themselves.

The changing of the guard was such an utter waste of a pretty morning and a mood-buster; I can only handle so much shoving and cameras in front of my face (although we couldn't see anything anyway!) I would have skipped Harrods- it's such an institution, I know, but it was just too cheesy for me, especially the memorial and tourist trap lower floor. Although a trip there did show me where the ladies from Absolutely Fabulous do their grocery shopping.
Living in Italy I miss certain things from the States that I was able to do in London- especially go to a movie (in English) on a beautiful big screen in Leicester Square and then have great Thai food.
Sia

Would have skipped (most) things that were typically for tourists. Meaning - don't go to Madame Tussauds and the Tower and the Dungeon and all that type of stuff, and stay away from tour buses... Just get a good walking map, make a shortlist of a couple places, and also head for the general areas like Kings Road, Hyde Park/Kensington, the Wharf area, around St. Pauls, and near the Opera/theatre district. And just let your eyes and ears do the roaming...

jpm: I don't think anyone has said London is boring. They have said that certain events or attractions are boring, or that London is not as interesting or appealing as other places (in their opinion).
