Things to do in Rome on a Sunday

Will be going to Rome soon and will be there on a Sunday. Are there any shopping opportunities on a Sunday? What about Saturday? Is the Collosium open on Sunday? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ah Sunday, my favorite day in Rome!

Unfortunately most shops are closed on Sundays, although expert Italy fodorites may be able to suggest a few noteworthy exceptions. There is the Porta Portese flea market in Trastevere on Sundays.

Yes the Colosseum is open on Sundays (or at least it's purported to be open daily). What's particulary enticing is that Via dei Fiori Imperiali (the major street leading to the Colosseum) is supposedly closed to vehicular traffic on Sundays and many locals turn out out for a leisurely stroll.

I think a visit to the Galleria Borghese as well as the surrounding villa (immense park) is especially enjoyable on Sundays. Strolling through the grounds alongside local families is a special treat. Ride one of the bike carts if you get a chance.

Hi Austin,

I'll be in Rome soon on a Sunday. Here's what we plan to do:

Portapentese market in Trastevere
Borghese Museum (need to reserve in advance)
Then walk from the museum back to Trastevere. Along the way we'll stop to see:

Spanish Steps
Trevi Fountain
Pantheon
Sant' Ignazio di Loyola
Santa Maria Sopra Minerva
Il Gesu
Piazza Navona
Sant' Andrea della Valle

Colosseum is open daily from 9:00am.

Hope this helps.

Actually, I have found many shops to be open in Rome on Sunday, esp along the Via del Corso and the Spanish Steps area. As I live in Switzerland where nothing is open on Sunday, I was quite surprised to find so many shops open in Rome on Sundays.

I agree that the flea market in Trastevere is a good Sunday option.

In my experience, most shops and restaurants in the Jewish Ghetto area seem to be closed on Sundays.

The Appian Way is closed to traffic on Sunday. Nice day for a stroll, a visit to a catacomb and to dine.
