I am going to Budapest in May.. I was wondering if people can share their favorite things to do there...

What I might enjoy in Budapest could differ greatly from what you might like.

I spent a week in Budapest and loved the city. You will get lots of suggestions of things to do but something a little out of the ordinary that I really enjoyed was a visit to The Budapest Statue Park. When the communist regime collapsed in 1989 instead of destroying all the communist statues around the city they gathered them up and put them all in a park just outside of town. You can take a minibus from the center city to the park. The tour includes the minibus out and back and you spend about an hour in the park. It doesn't take a long time and is not expensive but very interesting. (I thought)

Here are some ideas: Go to a thermal spa the 2 best I found are the Rudas and Szechenyi baths. Ate at many different restaurants any in Buda are great. The House of Terror is a must see, so is the Great Synagogue and the Hungarian National Museum. If your still looking for a hotel the Carlton is just great. You will find plenty to do Budapest is just great i'm going back for my second time in May.

My spouse's report on the Statue Park was less than enthusiastic. I imagine there are more compelling places, closer to the centre.

Lunch at the 4 Seasons Gresham Palace -- the great Canadian hotel chain scores again, brilliantly
The National Gallery in Heroes' Square
The Opera, if only for the Opera tour
Taking the commuter train (HEV) to Godollo, to see the Emperor's summer palace
Taking the train 10 km to Nagyteteny, to see a furniture collection lodged in a semi-rural palace
The public library whose name I cannot recall, quartered in a palatial, gilt-encrusted (late-19th C) townhouse
Walking across the Chain Bridge and slogging up to the Castle (or taking the funicular)
Dinners (multiple) at the Central Kavehaz
Wandering around the Castle district -- no particular itinerary
Dinner at the Karolyi Palota (palace), whose courtyard overlooks a beautiful public garden


...and one dream not yet realized: Checking out the recently restored New York Palace, now an Italian-chain hotel
