I think it's good to have separate threads for the trip reports and LDC reports ( I like the idea of a small website too), although, I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree when it comes to cutting and pasting and linking and whatnot...Yes! sign us up for an LDC tentatively for anytime during July 2,3,and 4th!

I'm still not sure whether we're getting to Portugal, but if we do it would probably be around the same time as Isabel. Just found out today that the trip is on. Still have to arrange flights. Going with a friend to visit her son in Ibiza, then Barcelona, and possibly Portugal or possibly other directions.

Matt - We'll arrive in Lisbon late in the day on Tues Sept 19th so I think LDC on eve of 20th or 21st might be good - Thanks, we're really looking forward to it.
Sher - Thanks for the info about auto rental. I'll look into both. Anybody else have exeperience with economycarrentals or carjet ? Also, We're pretty familiar with PIT but your offer is appreciated indeed.

I just checked out both auto sites and they both look reasonable. I did notice that Economy also includes Theft & Fire Insurance with NO excess and one free additional driver - all that and a lower rate. Sounds pretty good to me.
Matt - it occured to me that if I can find somewhere reasonably close to Moimenta Da Beira where I can return the car, I could rent in Lisbon, drop off in [someplace close to Moimenta Da Beira] and then take a train to Porto - wow ! I don't think we'll need a car in Porto so I think it would work. It doesn't look to me like there's any place big enough that's close enough to Moimenta Da Beira for a 'larger' auto rental, but I might be (hope I'm) wrong.
Any suggestions ?

It doesn't look like any train lines go near Moimenta da Beira but I'll take a look at Viseu.

WOW David! You are going into the real deep Portugal... places where no tourist ever reached 
I guess that you'll have beautiful views to the mountains and maybe you are able to venture to the highest point of Portugal (nice views but no snow during summertime since it's only 2000 meters high).
After some checks in CP site (www.cp.pt), I think your best bet is to drive to Régua in Douro river banks and take a train from there to Porto. It's 11.30 euros (1st class) and around 1h40m. I don't see any other viable option near Moimenta da Beira or Viseu.

I do also check this thread every day except when life gets especially hectic. I love reading about everyone's travels and I have gotten so much info from this site. Matt and Lobo: Thanks for taking us to another 500 posts. We will be in Portugal from June 19 to July 3 but will only be in Lisbon June 30, July 1, July 2. Maybe we could do a LDC meeting on July 2 with henryandcasper? I just want to make sure that you know we will have our kids with us,though. I don't want to impose children on anyone who doesn't want them so if you would like to meet without us or a separate time I will not be at all offended. Also, I am using economy car rentals. They will be dropping the car off at our hotel then we will return it to the airport in Lisbon. I will certainly let you know how it goes.

I'm not sure I understand all of the insurance issues though, specifically 'Compulsory' "LDW ( CDW + TW) - included in price; Non Waivable LDW amount (not included); PAI,SCDW (Super C.D.W covers the C.D.W Mandatory excess charge) not included, SLDW & SPAI
not included.
There's really no explanation of these terms on the website. Does anybody understand them ?

LDW. When you rent this car, they are providing you with so much collision damage(when you have an accident) and theft protection (if the car is stolen.)
There is a LDW, non waivable excess that is not included. We would call this deductible. It is different for every car that is rented, depending on the value of the car. Sometimes it can be as much as E2000, but surely not that much on the car you are planning to rent (economy). The contact should state this value.
The car or object that you may hit is covered by their basic insurance that they provide. But your car is not if they are giving you an excess.
PAI is personal accident insurance. This covers you and the stuff in your car.
SPAI and SLDW is coverage that you can buy separately at the time of rental to reduce your excess liability , sometimes to zero and sometimes to a very little amount like $100 or so. The same with you or your personal belongings.
If you have qualifying credit card, you sometimes can decline all of the provided insurance and use the credit card coverage.
This becomes tricky when the rental agency will not provide a car this way. It is usually listed as inclusive or exclusive coverage and is reflected in the price.
You can also take out a separate rental car coverage from some companies that will cover these insurances as buying them from the rental agency can be very expensive and double your cost at times.

Do men wear shorts in Portugal - or does that just scream 'American Tourist'? We'll be there in Sept and my understaning is that it's still pretty warm then.

What (approx) is the current price of gasoline in Portugal ? Does it vary much by location ?

What (approx) is the current price of gasoline in Portugal ? 1.4 euros/litre (yes, it's expensive). For budget purposes a medium car at a medium speed (100 km/h) should "drink" about 8 litres/100 km outside cities and 10 litres/100 inside cities.
There are 2 kinds of leadless gasoline. 95 octanas and 98 octanas. The first is less expensive and there is no reason to use the second.
Does it vary much by location? It's very uniform, it may vary 1 cent or so, but no more than that.

My first day off of work to start preparing for the trip and I am now sick. Just a head cold, yet not fun to fly 12 hours with. Trying hard to rest in between getting ready.
We will be in Lisbon from June 19-30. Our schedule is very flexible as I don't want to run ourselves into the ground.
We are like Sarasara, traveling with our children. They are 12 and 8. Would love to meet somewhere that will be okay with them as they are not into long dinners. Also, they are extrememly picky! How about the street I believe I read about "Frango ?" where they have the wonderful spit roasted chicken? Too bad we couldn't meet up with Sarasara since she too will be with her children.
Thanks for the offer to check out the apt. for me. I am just going to trust that it is nice. I have read the reviews from other people and they were fine. Paulo has been great so far, so I am not expecting anything less.
I haven't been very successful with booking a tour with Lisbon walks. I received one reply, but that was only after sending about 5 inquiries. For the dolphin tour, they did reply once but suggest I contact them once I arrive, which I guess I will do.
Any thoughts on the best way to get to Setubal for the dolphin tour as they do not provide transportation?
