Hello David
I'll discuss the agenda with Matt today, but I think 21st September is ok. I believe that in 3 months time some more Fodorites will jump in. I have the expectation that Kenderina and a friend will be in town by that time.
Kenderina, are you out there???
But no matter we are 6, 8 10 or 12, good food and good talk is guaranted.
Send me a mail ([email protected]) and I'll reply with my phone number. The same channel may be used for details (meeting point, meeting hour, etc...)

Yes, I'm round here but my friend still doesn't have his vacation days from work. The only think we know right now, it's that it won't be before the 21 of September. I'm sorry to be soooo last minute but that's the way it works...

Lobo:

No doubt 'good food and good talk' is guaranteed !

Thanks for providing an email adddress.

Please don't remind me that it is really 3 months away (actually it's a couple of days shy of 3 months!).

Saw mention of octopus and pigs ears - count us in ! Had octopus twice in Chicago last week (absolutely incredible - called the chef and got the recipe !) and had a pigs ear burger in Jackson, Mississippi last summer. One of our favorite 'travel in Europe' stories involves a dinner of 'The Heart and [Colhões] of the Bull' (hope it's okay to use that word here! ) in Florence - another fabulous meal.

Kenderina - hope we'll meet you too !

David

Matt/Lobo:
Have just finished reading all of this thread too include Matts'recipe for Caldo and all of Lobos pastry shop suggestions (in between World Cup matches to include an unmentionable US Team..which I'm sure the both of you will be doing this weekend...what with England and Portugal still in)and want you to know that you have done a real service to we travellers. My sincerest congratulations. We too live in San Diego so I enjoyed Patrick and Les comments on their trip as well as yours on the St. Antonio/Alfama/LDC event.Wished we could have been there for that. We will be taking off from Cascais on Sun. 27 Aug. and would appreciate any suggestions from readers concerning a good place to stop off/restraurants between Cascais and Porto for the evening..as we are in no rush to get there. And once in Porto any suggestions on restaurants/place to stay etc.The Albergaria Miradoura was one recommended to us. Also as I recall there used to be a Gypsy Flea mkt. at the BullRing in Cascais every other Sunday. Does anyone know if this still goes on and, if so, what Sundays are they held? Needless-to-say Ruth and I are very pleased to see that we are scheduled for an LDC event on 25 August and are looking very much forward to meeting all of you.
Regards, Bob

I would just like to offer my gratitude to Joao (Lobo),Gertrude, Matt and Lizzy for a wonderful evening last night.

The dinner and the company was truly exceptional!

I am sure Matt will be posting soon, so I will leave the details to him.

And let me just say that we ate 3 of the fartudas once we arrived home, and I finished the last one off just know with my coffee. Delicious!

Matt; we would really like to visit with you and Lizzy again in Costa Caparica. As soon as we figure out the best day, we will ring you.

Good to know you enjoyed our last LDC event. I was concerned about the children because the late hour we finished, but they were wonderful.

The Saint John’s evening “arraial” in Carnide was an unexpected and added bonus, with the singing and dancing and farturas and everything You had an idea of the atmosphere of summer festivities in villages all around Portugal.

Gertrude and I wish you a very pleasant stay.

Lobo, I will try the octopus again. my friend made the octopus himself on the grill and maybe it will taste better when cooked by a professional. Nameka, thanks for the confirmation of the apt. We are glad it is nice. Any thing in particular that your kids loved that we shoud do when we are in Lisbon? We went to silves yesterday to see the castle and a very old church. It was beautiful. I would recommend the trip. then we went to lagos to do alittle shopping. Very touristy but o.k. if you want little tourist items to take home. The kids got gifts for their friends at home. Salema is beautiful but not too touristy. We love it. At this point I would give the car rental a thumbs up but If you can wait to book I will report when we return it and see how smoothly that goes.

Hi! I stumbled on this forum while planning a trip to Portugal in October, including Lisbon, and I have been scanning through all the messages .
I am left with some great ideas, and a few mysteries.....
1) There are many tantalizing references to Nameka's apartment; what and where is it, and how do I find out if it's available in the second week of October?
2) How far is it from Evora to Marvao, and then from Marvao back to Lisbon? I'm thinking we might skip Obidos and go to Marvao instead?
3) Any dinners being considered for October?

I feel a bit like I've butted into a group of people engaged in an intimate conversation, but I couldn't resist.
Thanks,
Leslie

Leslie, welcome to LDC train
1) It's in Chiado. Metro station Baixa-Chiado. Other informations are left for those with 1st hand knowledge.
2) With distance, you mean transit times by car? If yes, consider 1.5 hours Evora/Marvao and 2.5 hours Marvao/Lisboa. I prefer Marvao to Obidos, but it's just an opinion.
3) Tell us your window of opportunity for LDC meeting. Matt and I and our best halves are always looking for a pretext to go out for good food and conversation.
And finally a question: where in the world do you come from?
My mail is [email protected] fell free to mail

Welcome Leslie,

I am in the apt as we speak. It is quite nice and in the heart of the city. I doubt that there is a better place to be.

Please don't feel like you have butted into anything as everyone here starts out as strangers and quickly becomes old friends. My family and I have met with Joao (Lobo) and Matt and their spouses (Gertrude and Lizzy) 2x during our stay and had the most delightful time. We hope to meet up with Matt and Lizzy and children for a day at the beach before we leave. So needless to say, ask what you want?

Let me get you the apt site;

Alas, the apartment is booked for our dates. We will arrive in Lisbon Oct 8th or 9th, and be there for 3-4 days, including a day in Sintra. Then we hope to rent a car and drive to Salema, spend 2-3 days in the Algarve, then Evora, Marvao and back to Lisbon for 1 night, probably the 17th. Our itinerary is completely open at this point, except for the beginning and the ending dates; we have to be in Paris on Oct 18. So, I'd love to hear anyone's "not to be missed" suggestions.
As for myself, I live in San Francisco, but grew up and spend a lot of time in New York. I'm happy to answer any questions about either one if I can be helpful. My husband and I have never been to Portugal; we're going on the recommendation of our daughter, who made a quick visit there while studying in Sevilla, and said it was the most beautiful place she had ever been.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions for places or accommodations.

Leslie

Hi Leslie,

My husband and I just got back from Portugal a few weeks ago. I wrote a trip report - entitled "Portugal Trip Report". You may find it helpful - especially for Salema and Evora.

Well today we have decided to do "nothing" at the request of the kids. They just want a day where they can just lounge around and relax. Although that means we will probably have to miss out on some things, with the next couple of days comes a very hectic schedule and so here we are. This is also our last day of internet access while we are in Portugal. We should be able to get back online once we reach our cottage in England on Friday, June 30th.

I will check in then.

Matt/Lobo: Wow what a football weekend! Now how are the two of you going to watch the "big" match? Are your wives also addicts? I'll bring a bottle of good Calif. wine to the winner although my alligance lies with Spain ( I spent a number of years there working with the Spanish Army and have a small place just outside of Estepona) ...and if they should play either England or Portugal will wager another on Spain.
Bailey: Wonderful pictures/great report. Am going to review in detail as soon as the Italy/Australia match is over.

hello everyone, I am online in salema again. We are having our last day on the beach. our friends have left and our family will be going tomorrow to monsaraz, evora, fatima, sintra then lisbon. I did try octopus salad last night and it was sooo much better at the restraunt. We ate at barco steak house and the food was delicious. I had chicken with mushrooms and my husband had a steak. it was the best food we had so far. A couple of nights ago we ate at Mira Mar right on the ocean i~t was beautiful and I had lamb kabobs and potatoes. Others had sea bãss and fish stew. It was all good. I love the vinho verde and the tiñto wine. sorry about the spelling mistakes. I ãm having a hãrd time getting used to this different keyboard. I will post again ~if we find an internet cafe in Evora.
