Things to do around Rome Airport (Leonardo da Vinci)

Hi all ,

My family will be spending 1 day and one night around Rome Airport Fiumicino and was wondering if there is anything to see or do around the area.

Also looking for reasonably priced (100 Euro - 120 Euro) accomodation for 2 Adults 2 Children for one night.

Thanks in advance

Shane

Quite close to the airport as the crow flies is Ostia Antica - ancient Rome's old port - and one of the best Roman archaelogical sites anywhere IMO - can't be too bad a taxi ride.

I agree Ostia Antica would be a logical place to visit. But you can also reach Rome itself via train very easily from the airport, either the local train or the Leonardo Express to the Termini station

I don't understand. If you're dropping a car off there, and then planning to visit Rome, why aren't you going right into Rome? Why stay around the airport for a day?

Ostia Antica, Ostia Antica and Ostia Antica -- both the "scavi" (the ruins), and the small town (which actually is ancient Ostia).

If you are game for a magical place, try Roderigo de Vivar for accommodations, in Ostia Antica. With kids, you might check out beach accommodations in the town of Ostia, at the sea. Use TripAdvisor for a guide.

the Leonardo Express train into Termini is only 50 minutes. Why would you want to stay at the airport?

It just happened we are a day short in Umbria and need to drop the car back at the airport and thought it maybe fun to spend just a night in that area, drop the car off early the follwoing day and take a taxi back into Rome for a 4 night stay.

Zeppole thanks for the suggestion much appreciated.

If I can jump onto this thread...

My wife and I will be taking a cruise that will start and end in Civitavecchia (Oct23-Nov5, 2009). We will spend four nights in Rome prior to the cruise, and after the cruise we have a 7:20am flight out of FCO the next day (Nov 6).

Our current plan for the day we disembark is take the train from Civitavecchia and transfer at the Ostiense station to the FR1 train line to FCO, where we will stay at the airport Hilton (free award stay). After checking in or dropping our bags at the hotel, we would like to spend the rest of day visiting Ostia Antica.

Does anyone have any idea concerning the practicality of taking a taxi from the airport to Ostia Antica? Would we have any problems finding a taxi to take us back to the airport? I guess as a backup plan, we can take the train from Ostia Antica to Rome (Ostiense) and transfer to the FR1.

Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated!

Mark

You could take a taxi to Ostia Antica quite easily. The bigger problem would probably be finding a cab to take you back to the airport. When we were in Ostia Antica a few years ago there were no cabs to be found when we finished our tour of the ruins. You could try to arrange for the cab that takes you to pick you up at a specific time. The train back to Rome and out again to the airport is a back up plan and would give you an extra evening in Rome

Ostia Scavi is just a stone's throw from Ostia Antica (the town) and there are bars and restaurants there that will call a taxi for you.

Are you sure you can't just drop off the car in Rome instead of the airport?

What airline has a 6:30am departure that requires a 4am checkin?

I believe it is customary 2 hrs before departure for international check in, in the States, it actually requires 3 hrs check in before departure
