The UK's most overrated tourist attractions - and some top tips

I thought these comments from locals might be of interest:

Patrick Hi,
As a Welsh Local, I would agree with both those sets of comments.

Thanks Patrick!

Oh, I loved Borough Market. It was very crowded though and my friends and I lost each other. Couldn't help it really because all that delicious food was calling our names. If you go with friends, make sure you assign a meeting place. You'll need it.

I have to agree , no trip to London is complete without Borough MArket.
Schuler..a good meeting place is the wine shop near the pub! They always have a nice selection of different wines by the glass and makes the waiting worthwhile!!

Guardian also did an article which put Tate Modern as one of the most overrated places to go - along with The London Eye

Funny, I thought surely they would name Land's End among the UK's tackiest.

I wonder if this is all because those "locals" have seen these things a jillion times. I can imagine what they would say if they ever traveled to (what some might say is) "overrated" New York!"

Let the food fight begin.

Yes, the London Eye is right up there on my list of overrated attractions. I felt the same way about the gigantic ferris wheel in Odaiba in Tokyo, too. I just happen to travel with people who LOVE ferris wheels.

Dukey, I know what you mean but I think you will find that locals do not go to the attractions on their doorstep often, if at all.

IMHO:

Nice to see the London Dungeon getting put on the rack by the Guardian. What garbage (the dungeon, not the newspaper).

Has Warwick Castle gotten that tacky? My kids loved it, but it has been a few years ago.

Yeah, the London Zoo has a lot of nerve charging 14.50 pounds for admission. The world class San Diego Zoo charges $32--and London's is no where near the same quality. In another world capital, Washington DC, the zoo is free. In London Zoo's defense, they have a major renovation/expansion program underway.

I find it a bit odd to go to another country to go to a zoo at all....

it's not the zoo's fault that the dollar is weak now. £ for £, the zoo charges just a bit more than a leicester square movie. locally, its ticket price does not reflect that of a top notch attraction but rather the lower tier attraction that it is.

i'm no fan of the london zoo, but just thought i'd point out the flaw in your so strongly worded comparison.

I'm not a great fan of zoos as a whole, and I don't approve of free zoos at all. The few free zoos I've had the misfortune of visiting all had appalling standards and the animals looked mangy and utterly miserable. (I haven't visited the zoo in Washington DC so can't comment on the standards there, however. Perhaps it would change my opinions.)
I imagine a good, well-kept zoo with a high standard of animal care (and I'm not necessarily including London zoo as I haven't been there) is an extremely expensive operation and surely making visitors pay is the best way to fill the coffers.

Yeah, but...

London Zoo 14.50 pounds
Tower of London 15.00 pounds

Don't Judy, Warwick Castle is actually great - one of the few major castles that is still in one piece.

It's a given that Mme Tussards is the worst, everyone else is fighting for 2nd place

Warwick Castle is on this list! So much for the list as this castle gets rave reviews from most sources, some even touting it as the UK's finest castle. Most overrated - Warwick Castle!
