The SNCF Web Site

I posted earlier on this same subject, but some glitch in even the old system is now preventing me from replying to my own new message. <BR> <BR>For those of you who responded to my original question, I appreciate your sharing your information. But there is nothing I can do to make that French system work. <BR>I get Java Script errors and I never can find a button to click on to take me farther after I put in the point of origin and the destination, along with the time of departure. I have tried in Netscape 4.72 and the newest Internet Browser from Microsoft -- the new Explorer. Neither works. <BR>I know 4.72 is not the most recent browser, but if the system is set up to work only with new browsers, it is going to exclude a lot of people. I think it is a glitch some how in the system. If you will try it again and see if it still works for you. If it does, please tell me exactly what you are using and how you made it work. I am totally defeated at the moment and have no idea what to do next.

Hi Bob. I tried the sncf site myself, because I'm using Netscape 4.08 (with OS 7.6 for Mac), which is outdated. I didn't have any real problem at sncf, though I don't like their new format--very constricting. <BR> <BR>I'm not a computer wiz, so I'm not sure what to suggest. When I have problems like this I always try two things: first, I close down all open applications and restart (reboot using "restart" from menu) and relaunch to refresh memory; if that fails, I assign more RAM to an application and see if that helps; most often, it makes a world of difference. I have to use a lot of RAM with Netscape to get it to work at all smoothly. <BR> <BR>As far as Java script goes, that's outta my realm; but there have been times when I'm "missing" things on screen and by simply restarting and then relaunching Netscape, I get them a second time. <BR> <BR>Maybe somebody else will have a better suggestion. Computer problems are so frustrating. I sympathize. Good luck!

Bob, <BR> <BR>The site keeps taking you back to French version no matter what. <BR> <BR>I tried Netscape (4.7), IE 5.0 and Neoplanet. They all give same results. I think their indirection is messed up... <BR> <BR>It might be worth sending the webmaster a message if you can find the address.. <BR> <BR>Atul <BR>Atul

I do nothing special whatsoever, and I can access it under both Netscape 6.0 and IE Explorer 5.5 and have multiple times since 4/16. I suspect you do not have your internet security settings set to allow you to view it if you are getting Javascript errors, that's usually the problem. You should not be too restrictive in your personal browser settings or you won't be able to view a lot of stuff nowadays, in my experience. You should go to your "Tools" folder on the top bar, then click on "internet options", then "Security" tab, then "Custom Level" towards bottom. You should then got a long list of stuff you can mark as enable or disenable, etc -- I always mark "Enable" for all the stuff related to ActiveX, Java and Scripting; and I put Javascript at "low" security. I bet you may have "disenable" for some of this stuff, I used to have that problem myself so I recognize the symptoms. My IE browser is older than yours, it appears, so I think it's your options settings.

For Christina. I enabled where you said enable. But I still get to the screen where it asks me for the departure station and the arrival station, ages of the passengers, but it does not give me a comple screen. There is never a button to continue on to the actual scheduling information. <BR> <BR>I use my two browsers with the German, Swiss, Austrian, Polish, and British rail systems with no trouble at all. <BR>But this one defeats me. <BR> <BR>How about you trying to find the times that trains leave from Paris for Firenze (Florence Italy) and tell me what you come up with. I am getting very frustrated with the sncf browser. <BR>I can get the departure times off of the Swiss system, the German system, even the Austrian system. So it is no problem to find the departure times. <BR>What I cannot find is the cost of a ticket. That information seems to be held on the French site and not onthe others. It is not merely a question of getting the info, I would like to be able to access the sncf site like I did a few weeks ago. I used it last summer to reserve seats on the TGV for Lausanne from Gare de Lyon with no trouble. <BR>But now I cannot do anything with it. <BR>

Too bad it's not working for you; can't imagine what else the problem would be. Netscape has slightly diff. ways to enable all that scripting stuff and not as complicated (also, it defaults to being enabled whereas IE does not, I believe). I think for Netscape it's in the Edit section, Preferences (that's from memory). If you did have that stuff disenabled in IE, be sure you re-boot before trying again (not sure if that makes a difference, but it usually does). Just be glad you don't have AOL, their browser is really assinine; I have a personal AOL account and don't use it much for the internet as it's so bad, I've had all kinds of scripting and Java errors with their browser. In any case, you didn't say what dates, so I just tried 4/24 which would probably be a schedule for a weekday: it gave basically four departures (all from Gare de Lyon, did not see Bercy anywhere in all this ...hmmm; all of these go through Milan and involve change of trains in Milan which I won't itemize) depart Paris 7:54 am, arrive Florence 18:29 pm; depart Paris 10:54 am, arrive Florenze 21:47 pm (or 23:18 using later train from Milan); depart Paris 19:37 pm, arrive Florence next day 8:53 am; depart Paris 22:16 pm, arrive Florence next day 11:47 am (or 12:29 or 12:47 for two later trains from Milan). All of these fares are fairly similar, 674-686F for second class, adult aged 26-59. Surprisingly (to me) the night fare for 2nd-class couchette is same as 2nd class daytime fare. A few of these trains have fares of 766F on the alternate arrival times in Florence (must be some better train), specifically the 11:47 am and 12:47 pm arrivals. Raileurope only lists one of these routes, I think, the 19:37-8:53 one.

PS this is just a wild guess, but the SNCF site does not seem to like the destination of "Firenze", it would not give me anything with that either; I had to type in "Florence"

Thanks for the information, both train schedule wise and technocrat wise. <BR>I will keep trying to see if I can figure someting out. <BR>Very frustrating to fail at something <BR>when in the past you have had success.

Bob: <BR> <BR>I remember being very frustrated once trying to use the SNCF site and then realizing that the screen was considerably larger than my window. Once I figured that out, all I had to do was use the right arrow button to get to the part of the screen where you could finish filling out the information and perform the actual search. <BR> <BR>Could it be that simple a problem perhaps? <BR> <BR>

No way, Jose. I learned to scroll that screen left and right two years ago. <BR>I get garbage on the screen where useful symbols should be.
