Kerouac, it's called commiseration and empathy. Got any? If not, then just don't read what bothers you so much.

kerouac..you really are quite heartless. Ever thought just once of keeping your thoughts to yourself.

kerouac-
You might try keeping a lid on it. How very inappropriate.

Maitaitom & Tracy-
My thoughts are with you and I'm glad you had a great trip. I'm sure little cupid enjoyed a wonderful home and was much loved.

As an aside, I remember being in Bern, Switz. one time when I got a phone call in my room around 10pm. They asked for Anabelle and half asleep, I asked them why my cat was calling me! Turns out "Anabelle" was my roomate's sister calling her from Germany (not my kitty Anabelle Conchita)! We've laughed about that one many times...

Put a sock in it, kerouac. How obnoxious.

Terribly sorry, maitatom.

Aww, this is sad. So sorry for you and Tracy, maitai. Best to you from another of the many pet-lovers here...

I've got the song "Cupid" running through my brain now.

Since Cupid was completely nonjudgmental and did not have a mean bone in his body, I will take his sage lead regarding Kerouac's comments.

I hope the topic does make people realize how important their animals are to them, and although I don't know if we could have done anything differently (except just never travel), it does show that travel, like life, can sometimes be bittersweet.

Tom and Traci,

I am so sad for the loss of your beloved Cupid. Diablo sends doggie hugs.

I know oh so well what you mean about missing our furry children while traveling. Last year while I was in Paris, I found myself going into pet stores just to look at the puppies.

Take your time and grieve. When you are ready to post your trip report we all will be here. Peace.

Tom

Condolences, Maitais.

Few things in life are as rewarding as the bond with an animal. I hope the memories with Cupid outweigh the pain soon...

Oh wow, you people are good. Fishing for sympathy or adding Hallmark moments on an internet forum is one of the most devastatingly superficial things I have ever seen.

If I am being purposely annoying, I think that it is only to match the ridiculous proportions that this outpouring has reached. If maitaitom's grandmother or child had died, some of you would not even be able to push up your cybergrief one notch, because you have already hit the maximum.

Cupid was certainly a delightful cat and is clearly sorely missed, but to anthropomorphize him to such an extent has an element of obscenity.

Kerouac, you should apologize or just drop it now. Otherwise, you are asking for it and believe me, other posters are going to flame your sorry ass for a long time.

I certainly deserve to be flamed, because I have nothing to apologize about.

My beloved grandmother and father died, my mother has Alzheimer's and I had to put her in a nursing home, my brother had a heart attack. I even recently had to assist a friend who had chosen to die, and I forgot to tell all of you that sometimes I don't post because I have had a few problems and I have not even been able to travel since 2005 due to family obligations. I just thought this was a travel forum and not a personal strip tease club where every little event in one's life is exposed so that complete strangers can toss 'love' and sympathy other strangers at no personal cost of involvement whatsoever just by clicking a mouse. How so very convenient!

Maitaitom is an excellent writer as he had proved in previous trip reports, but I don't think it was necessary to use a dead pet for advertising a trip report to come.

Now, those who wish to do so may pull out their flame throwers and flame me out of Fodor's forever. Believe me, I have used this site to get away from my personal problems most of the time and not to showcase them. I guess it is a minority view, but leaving this place will certainly not be a loss for me.

kerouac..you may feel we are all strangers here but just because you haven't met someone face to face doesn't mean we don't have a personal connection here.

Yes, we have all enjoyed Tom's trip reports. He has certainly brought us many smiles...more than I can count. His trip report for Paris had one moment that was so romantic it brought tears to my eyes.

You turn peoples concern for a well regarded member of this site into something sorted and contrived. I usually don't get involved in debates and shouting matches on this here but I really couldn't help it this time. That last statement about Tom turning his grief into an advertisement for a future trip report was really low. I knew school yard bullies that were nicer than you.

Kerouac, I feel sad for all that you've been through with your friends and family but please....if you have rotten, uncaring thoughts because people are showing compassion for a well liked member of Fodor's, please feel free to keep those to yourself because the rest of us really don't want to hear them.

Kerouac,

Perhaps this is the difference between American and European cultures. No one in Switzerland would publicly mourn a loss of a pet. It would seem to superficial.

Because of the large amount of Americans using this site, this is one battle you are going to lose.

I do understand your frustration.

Another fodorite who has immensely enjoyed your reports, but also relates to your loss being the owner of an older cat too. I always feel guilty leaving her (as I am tomorrow for a week), but my neighbors take pretty good care of her. The biggest downside of owning a pet. Tom, my sincere sympathies.

Kerouac, I am sorry for all your personal troubles too, we've all been through them, I had two personal losses while away, where I had to cut vacations short, and I, like you, tend to keep my personal life personal. On the other hand, I have met many fodorites and enjoyed their company, trials and tribulations.

As they say, que sera sera (sp?)

I was looking forward to Tom's report and was almost wondering why he hadn't begun to post. Now I know why. Maybe its just me, but I think his intent may have been to let us know about the delay, not necessarily to turn this post/forum into a wake for his cat. Any loss is tough - take your time!
