The Hidden Ireland guest houses
I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations or experience with the houses that are part of the "Hidden Ireland" program? I stumbled across their web page, and some of the properties looks extremely nice. Unfortunately, they are not listed in either the official hotels and guesthouses guide, or the B&B guide. I have found some good reviews of certain of the properties, but absolutely nothing on most of the others.

Any information or comments about them would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Mike Stewart

Well, I've managed to answer my own question (above) somewhat. Karen Brown's "Ireland: Charming Inns & Itineraries" 1998 edition (Fodor's Travel Publications), recommends a number of them, and gives short reviews. Some of them are quite expensive! You can find the book at Chapters, and other stores with good travel sections.

I would still be interested if anyone out there has actually been to any of these places, and has their own comments.

Thanks again,

Mike

When we went to England & Scotland,(1993) we stayed in B&B's that were part of the Wolsley Lodge Group. They were excellent and reasonably priced. When planning my October trip to Ireland, I contacted Wolsley Lodge for recommendations in Ireland-Hidden Ireland is a "sister" affiliation. I have seen a few individual properties with web sites. My experience with the Wolsley properties was very positive and would assume the same standards would apply to Hidden Ireland properties.

My husband and I just returned from our sixth trip to Ireland. We have stayed in three Hidden Ireland places and really enjoyed them:
Ardnamona House in Co.Donegal
It was an old farmhouse and we had a huge room. We ate dinner there and afterwards sat in the sitting room to meet all of the guests.
Moycullen House in Co. Galway
This too was a beautiful old farmhouse. We had a large room and ate dinner in the restaurant which had stone walls and candles in the fireplace.
Cullintra House in Co. Kilkenney
This is my favorite Hidden Ireland House and we returned for our second time. Two nights stay are required with dinner and dinner is late, but memorable. We met wonderful people on holiday from Ireland.
There is a series of video tapes called "An Irish Country Calendar" which feature some Hidden Ireland homes. It is available in public libraries.
If you have any questions, let me know.
