Thank you!
Thank you for responding! I’m happy to do either of the things you mentioned. I’d love to see a lake too! So, since you’re so kindly responding, here’s a succinct question:
what would you do if you wanted to go on a medium gorgeous hike in the Alps that’s not too crowded? I’m coming from Vienna by plane or train, have 2-3 nights, would love to stay in a gentle, pretty town, and then will go to Paris. THANK YOU! (If you ever need info on US travel, I’m happy to return the favor!).

Another option could be a train from Vienna to a location in Austria. I would suggest Neustift im Stubaital. It's situated just above Innsbruck and is a small village in the valley of Stubaital. Much smaller and less touristy than Chamonix. But it is a fairly long train ride from Vienna (over 4 hours) and an additional hour of bus from Innsbruck to the village.
There are other options (like the neighbouring valleys to Zermatt) that might suit your requirements even better (especially that with not too much crowds), but with only 2-3 nights available and no car, I think you would spend too much time getting there.

I myself won't be going to the Alps this summer after getting a puppy that needs raising. But next year the plan is this trip:

Earlier I have been going mostly on centre based hikes. But I've become more and more of a "purist" and want to go away from the crowds as much as possible; therefore less-known multi day hikes. The Tour des Ecrins has earlier been a less plausible option due to very difficult logistics, but a new air route from Oslo to Lyon changed that. If they continue with that also next year, I'm 90 % sure it will be this hike.
