TGV question

I just booked my tickets to Beaune from Gare de Lyon on TGV. I will be picking up my tickets before traveling. Are the ATMs easy to use and in English or is it easier to pick up the tickets at a counter? I've had a bad experience in Switzerland on a machine, and want to avoid that situation. Also, once I get the tickets, do they have to be validated or composted for TGV reservations? Thanks.

Do you read French? I find the ATMs easy to use in theory, but in practice, I could never get them to work with my credit card (which the clerk said was usually true for American credit cards). It is easier to pick them up at the counter, the only reason one might not is a line.

The ticket will say if it must be composted. Unless it is nonrefundable, it will have to be. I think all French train tickets have to be composted that are actual tickets (not printouts of nonrefundable PREMs), but there might be some exceptions I don't know. I know Thalys tickets don't need composting, which surprised me when I bought one. When in doubt, it is not going to hurt anything to stick it in the machine anyway, so why not, if you don't know.

If you mean the ATMs for retrieving tickets, they can only be used with a "smart" credit card (one with a chip) that requires a PIN (rather than a signature). They're very common in Europe, but, as far as I know, are only in the pilot stage in North America.

You'd be better off going to the ticket counter. The lines move pretty quickly, but do allow yourself at least half an hour before your train leaves.
