Okay, now I see the solution. I had been going to the site www.sncf.com/indexe.htm, but the site www.sncf.com has an English flag! Thanks for your help.

I called SNCF at 33 836 35 35 39 for their English instructions (you then press a certain number to be connected with an English speaking agent who can reserve a ticket for you)

Susan, please note that while we could check the timetables via the SNCF website, we could not purchase our TGV ticket on the website (only by phone). I think certain routes, maybe TGV routes, are not sold via internet.

They also give you the option by phone of having your ticket mailed to you or just making a reservation and picking up the actual ticket at any SNCF office or station in France.

If you go to this site:

http://www.voyages-sncf.com/
(click on the British flag for English)

you should be able to book and purchase your tickets on-line. You should also have the option of having them mailed to you or picking them up when you get there. If you want to pick them up you have to wait to make the reservation 7 days or less before you will be in France. Since I bought the Rail 'n Drive pass I plan on making my TGV reservations online and paying for them when I get to Paris.
