Test yourself...

Recently, there was a discussion here about what "fluency" in another language means. To test your language skills, go to www.transparent.com and click on "tests and quizzes". You can test yourself on several languages (with or without the aid of dictionaries, textbooks, etc.).
BTilke (Brussels)

Thanks for the link! I had no idea my Italian had improved so much--90% on reading comprehension. Woohoo...!

This is a great tool! Obviously the spanish comprehension portion had some trick questions ;-) Or else, I must have rushed through it... That I should score lower in reading comp in Spanish than in French (96% yoohoo) doesn't make much sense. But all in all, I came out in the pretty good but rusty category for both. Thank you, BTilke

On the French test, I scored 147/150, getting one question wrong in the first grammar section. BUT I've been living in a French speaking city for the past 3 years...I know my scores will be a LOT lower when I take the Dutch and German tests!

On the French proficiency test there was a translation question of 'premier étage'. Being a European (Belgian) of course I checked the box next to 'first floor' ... WRONG! Afterwards I realized that in the States the first floor is what we call ground floor.
Myriam, I saw that too. I am tempted to write Transparent.com and tell them to reword or change that question because it is confusing to non-Americans.

BTilke

BTilke - thanks for the great website! I've been playing around with it all morning (not much work getting done today)and it's so much fun. Really made me see how downhill my Portugese has become over the years from not using it much. Thanks for sharing!

You know we're all getting old when a grammar and vocabulary test is described as "fun" ;-)
Anyway, nearly a dozen responses and no trolls or flamers...could we be on the way to a Fodors record?

Great site, BTilke. Still not a test of fluency by any means (my test is whether or not I can do math in the second language), but a nice exercise. Particularly useful for figuring out ones weaknesses.
