Terror House (must see for history)
If you are even slightly interested in history or understanding the Hungarian national personality or experiences you MUST go to the Terror House. It is an amazing museum/exhibition that details Hungary's existence under the Nazis, Russians, and socialism. One of the most moving and brilliantly put together exhibits I have ever seen. The building is actually the old headquarters for the Nazis and Russians. Most of it is in Hungarian (of course) but each room had materials printed in English that you can take with you as you walk through the exhibit.

Agree that this is a very well done museum. Audio guides are available, but unfortunately they aren't that visible when one enters the museum. I saw them on my way out. The reading material is most helpful.
The fact that the museum is housed in the former Nazi and KGB headquarters makes the experience quite meaningful. It is amazing that the Hungarian people survived one regime after another and have thrived in the way they have.

The building was a base for Hungarian organisations, not for occupying enemies: first the Arrow Cross, Hungary's own fascist/authoritarian party; afterwards by Hungary's political police (AVO/AVH). The reason I make this point is that the museum acknowledges, even emphasises, that much of the suffering imposed on Hungary was the work of Hungarians.
WillTravel, I understand your concern. If you visit Budapest, I suggest you go, and skip the basement.
