We took the train directly from the airport to the Termini train station where in turn we took the bus to the Campo di Fiori area. Not expensive at all (would have to check at home for the exact price). You could take a taxi from Termini to the Vatican.

Good afternoon, John
As long as you use a medallioned taxi, from the line and agree to the price before getting into the cab the price would be $50 to 60 USD less tip, again depending upon the time of day will be at your hotel in about a half hour.
surf www.travel.it/rome has airport transportations all listed....
Richard of Hickory Hills, Il....
I was in Rome at the weekend (10/31/98) and we took a taxi from the Vatican to the airport via our hotel on the Via Veneto (the Excelsior). Cost in lira was 85000 which is about $50. If we hadn't gone via the hotel it would have been about 65000 lira. You don't need to pre-agree a fare, the meters work and the drivers are honest so just get in and say where you want to go. Round up the fare to the nearest 5000 lira
