Been a few years since I was there.. I recall only one hotel of any size (back then) on the edge of town, a tourist tower - we stayed in a pension. Tavira is/was a charming wee place with good train & bus links, pebbly beach - ferry takes you across to big sandspits (ilahos) which have bars, campsites etc, atlantic rollers, blind eye turned to nude bathing on the inland coast. Not a mainstream tourist place (yay!)

Being a Portuguese, I can tell you you have chosen the right place to stay in Algarve, it's my favorite. Charming, wonderful beaches around, good food (mainly fish and seafood)and not touristic yet. <BR>As far as hotels, the Vila Gal&eacute; group has one in Tavira center and another lovely one in Salinas, some 4 km from Tavira. They are both very good. Check them out and have a wonderful stay

Dock: I LOVED Tavira, although its been several years since we were there but I would go back in a heartbeat. We took a bus from Lisbon to Tavira, stayed a couple of days and then went on to Spain. I can't remember the name of the place we stayed, although it was a Pension. It was great, had a restaurant downstairs, nice sized room with a terrace and bath and very cheap. Also had a great rooftop lounge where we sat and watched huge flocks of pigeons race around the rooftops. We were there in off-season, (Feb.) so it was very quiet. We were the only people on the beach, but it was warm and I have some beautiful photos of us strolling along the beach which was full of seashells. It's a great place to get off the beaten down tourist path for a few days! I will dig through my old travel stuff and see if I can come up with the name of the pension. Of course, I think it would be a different atmosphere in July than Feb.

In POrtugal last year. Tavira, Albuferia, and Villamoura are about the same, close together, etc., with good beaches, hotels, shops. Of the three, It hink Taviria has the most charm, but they are all good. Villamoura is about golf, in genera, but we stayed a month there and loved it..
