Tarragona is a nice city; Sitges is mainly a beach resort, though it also has a nice town. I daytripped to Sitges from Barcelona (just about 45 mins by rail) and this is a weird place. Known as one of Europe's primo gay resorts, men were being passionate right on the train platforms and throughout town. So Sitges is in other ways far different from Tarragona. ("Not that there's anything WRONG with that"

Thanks, Pal. Since we will be with our daughter, this is a good "heads up". Do you have any other advice for a nice day on a beach? We depart from Barcelona in the early morning, so I don't want to be too far away.

No i don't know much about Barcelona beaches but Barcelona itself has created a beach in preps for the Olympics when idustrial detritus was removed from its once derelict seafront and beaches created. But i don't know how nice these are.

Tarragona has a large beach, although we were there in off season (April). There is an impressive Roman amphitheater right beside the main beach & other Roman ruins sprinkled around - a double-decker aqueduct etc. A nice small old quarter too. The main downtown drag has several restaurants etc.
We stayed one night & wished we had more time. We stayed on the 9th floor of The Imperial Tarraco Hotel overlooking the amphitheater & the Med.
