espagnabound, in the north they don't have meals any earlier
I'm quite an early bird here in Spain..I have dinner around 9'30, 10 is a late dinner for me. But sure I won't have a theatre pre-dinner in London ! It's strange for me, in Madrid theatre begins at 10 !!

I'm practicing up now eating later and later. One of the reasons I want to understand how to order tapas is that I want to make a meal of them instead of a huge 10pm dinner.

And you surely can ! I did it in SS for lunch ...with a selection of pintxos at a bar that I don't remember the name (too many years ago) just in front of the "Buen Pastor" Cathedral, I got absolutely fed up Great food !!

I“ve had a look at www.todopintxos.com and my favourites bars and pintxos are on it.

There are 4 routes for pintxos on the web, but my favourites would be a mix between all of them. My fav is the prawn brochette of Goiz Argi, followed by Foie of La Cuchara, actually I love almost every pintxo of la cuchara (there are not on the bar, you“ve got to ask for them) and gratinated scallop of Ormazabal, where you“ll find a bar full of different pintxos, cold on the bar and to be heated on a second "level". Outside the old town, in Gros, one of the classic is Bodega Donostiarra with one of the best spanish omelete.In front of Bodega there you“ll find El patio de Ramuntxo with more elaborated pintxos. Also in Gros, Bar Bergara and Aloña Berri are excellent.

Another classic is gavilla in Bar Alustiza at San Marcial Street, near the Cathedral. In the same street Rojo y Negro and La Espiga are crowded before lunch during the weekend.

After all this list of bars and pintxos...I“m starving!! and it“s only 17.10 here!!!

Thank you! This has been so rewarding to get this detailed and expert advice.

While in San Sebastian, I will eat at least one of each of your favorite pintxos in your honor and lift a glass of wine.

For those who love tapas, Penelope Casa wrote a great cook book a few years ago on how to make then and throw a good tapas party - look for it on Amazon and enjoy. There is also another book by Tomas Garcia - hard to find, but a veritable bible on the topic.

In the Parte Vieja you will be overwhelmed by the choices of Pinchos (Pintxos). You don't need to know Spanish but let your eyes do the talkin'. La Cuchara de San Telmo for Fois was one of my favorites (per Maribel). Suggest you do the Paseo (the evening stroll along La Concha about sevenish and stop in for a Tortilla Espanola at Bar Martinez. If you are leaning towards the seafood pintxos then have the Txakoli white wine. The Sidar is very different from what we know in the USA. Try it. I have a hunch you'll be out all evening!! The Costa Brava was completely different. I based at a villa in Platja D"Aro. I can give you a restaurant there if you'll be near.
